Job Description

In the AI Engineer Intern position, you’ll work at the intersection of full-stack development and AI, building intelligent applications that transform healthcare delivery. You’ll join an AI-first technology team prototyping, experimenting with, and delivering AI-powered features. You’ll learn to balance rapid innovation with meaningful customer outcomes, and leverage your entrepreneurial spirit to build, strategize, and solve problems.

Direct Supply is building the future of healthcare technology with industry-leading products, solutions and platforms to help improve the lives of millions of seniors and those who care for them.

What You’ll Do and Impact:

  • Design and build AI-powered prototypes built on emerging technology frameworks.

  • Create MVPs and proofs-of-concept with potential for core product feature implementation.

  • Partner with product teams to identify AI opportunities in existing workflows.

  • Develop full-stack applications that integrate emerging technology at scale.

  • Build with modern frameworks (React, Node.js, Python, etc.) while prioritizing rapid iteration.

  • Write production-quality code and design scalable APIs connecting models to user interfaces.

  • Develop data pipelines and tools that enhance analytical products and infrastructure.

  • Deliver end-to-end features independently from database to UI.

  • Deploy applications using cloud services (AWS) with cost and performance optimization in mind.

  • Research emerging AI technologies and contribute to internal best practices.

  • Present technical demonstrations and product concepts to stakeholders.

Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, a related field, or equivilent self-directed learning (i.e. online courses, certifications, bootcamps, personal projects).

  • Demonstrated full-stack development experience (React, Node.js, Python).

  • Hands-on AI/ML project experience using foundation models.

  • Availability to work approximately 20 hours per week during the school year and full-time during breaks.

Additional Items of Interest:

  • Portfolio of end-to-end projects with AI features.

  • Side projects demonstrating product thinking and user-centered design.

  • Previous start-up experience or entrepreneurial initiatives.

Skills Needed:

  • Learn & Adapt - Continuously grow and adapt as technology, customer needs, roles, and work systems evolve. Stay curious, learn beyond your core specialty, experiment with new approaches, use AI to accelerate learning, and improve through feedback and setbacks.

  • Systems Thinking & Problem Solving - Identify the right problems to solve by understanding the broader system – customers, stakeholders, processes, data, technology, and AI. Connect root causes, dependencies, tradeoffs, and upstream and downstream effects to develop practical, scalable solutions that improve the whole.

  • Thinks like a founder while identifying opportunities, quickly validating assumptions, and focusing on customer work.

  • Thoughtfully applies AI to customer challenges, recognizing when advanced solutions add value.

  • Explores foundation model APIs, vector databases, and agentic frameworks to prototype and test emerging AI solutions.

  • Effectively communicates complex AI concepts clearly, highlighting their impact on end users and business outcomes.
