We are a data logistics company for healthcare whose products and solutions enable organizations to move and connect data securely. Datavant has a network of networks consisting of thousands of organizations, more than 70,000 hospitals and clinics, 70% of the 100 largest health systems, and an ecosystem of 500+ real-world data partners.

By joining Datavant today, you’re stepping onto a highly collaborative, remote-first team that is passionate about creating transformative change in healthcare. We hire for three traits: we want people who are smart, nice, and get things done. We invest in our people and believe in hiring for high-potential and humble individuals who can rapidly grow their responsibilities as the company scales. Datavant is a distributed, remote-first team, and we empower Datavanters to shape their working environment in a way that suits their needs.

Joining the DevOps team, as a Staff Cloud Engineer at Datavant you will help design, implement, and maintain our AWS and Azure Infrastructure services to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and security. You’ll work with peers in CloudSec and on the DevOps team to help manage the entirety of our cloud properties. This includes working collaboratively on the team to write terraform and help manage Kubernetes clusters on behalf of the team.

You’ll be familiar already with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, and will be natively very good at working with it. You are joining a team that is code forward and seeks peers that are the same. The DevOps team runs on a life blood of PR and code collaboration and this is a native world you are most familiar working in. You will help Datavant maintain our large terraform modules and code base as well as Cloud Organization settings in our environments.

You’ll bring with you:

  • Extensive experience in at least 1 cloud platform (Preferably AWS or Azure).
    • You will natively understand how services glue together and can have a deep dialog with us on how to design in your cloud and design decisions you would make. We expect you to be more versed than naming services, you understand the currency of configuration amongst them.
  • A strong proficiency in Terraform, with a track record of implementing complex IaC solutions.
    • You are probably stronger in HCL than any other language and are great at knowing all of the edge cases and gotchas for terraform.
  • Extensive experience with Kubernetes, including designing, deploying, and managing production-grade clusters.
  • Experience with containerization technologies.
  • Extensive experience managing a fleet of Cloud environments and Kubernetes clusters in a standardized way
  • A mastery in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation and configuration management.
  • Knowledge on Github and Github pipelines (Actions).
  • A solid understanding of networking and security principles, and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with remote teams.
  • Knowledge of classic configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef, Puppet).

You will be working on:

  • Developing, refactoring, and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform to automate the provisioning and management of cloud resources. We expect you are amazing in this area.
    • Including helping Datavant to transition legacy deployments and tooling into a standardized model with Terraform.
  • You will be called upon to help us manage our AWS and Azure organizations and work on Account Structure, OUs, Central Log Aggregation, AWS Tag Policies in terraform.
  • You will put your hands on code daily to help improve the environment. You should expect in this role to be pulling PRs all day and be very comfortable with committing.
    • If you do not routinely build in terraform, yaml, and kubernetes this role will probably not be for you.
  • Making our cluster management amazing. Collaborating with development teams and your peers in CloudSec to ensure seamless integration and deployment of applications within Kubernetes environments.
  • Helping with the development and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines to facilitate automated testing, deployment, and scaling of applications.
  • Implementing robust monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions to ensure the health and performance of our infrastructure.
  • Ensuring security best practices are adhered to across all infrastructure components with your CloudSec peer team.
  • Providing top level troubleshooting and resolution to infrastructure issues, providing timely and effective solutions.
    • Datavant has an KTLO team. Your work is primarily focused on projects to foster greatness. You will be involved in runOps only when you or your team is needed in tier 3 support scenarios where you are the definitive expert.

Bonus points if:

  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Primarily Datadog).
  • Experience with service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio, Linkerd).
  • Familiarity with serverless architectures and functions-as-a-service (e.g., AWS Lambda).

We are committed to building a diverse team of Datavanters who are all responsible for stewarding a high-performance culture in which all Datavanters belong and thrive. We are proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, or other legally protected status.

Our compensation philosophy is to be externally competitive, internally fair, and not win or lose on compensation. Salary ranges for this position are developed with the support of benchmarks and industry best practices.

We’re building a high-growth, high-autonomy culture. We rely less on job titles and more on cultivating an environment where anyone can contribute, the best ideas win, and personal growth is driven by expanding impact. The range posted is for a given job title, which can include multiple levels. Individual rates for the same job title may differ based on their level, responsibilities, skills, and experience for a specific job. The estimated salary range for this role is  $180,000 - $225,000.

At the end of this application, you will find a set of voluntary demographic questions. If you choose to respond, your responses will be anonymous and used to help us identify areas of improvement in our recruitment process. (We can only see aggregate responses, not individual responses. In fact, we aren’t even able to see if you’ve responded or not.) Responding is your choice and it will not be used in any way in our hiring process.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
