We believe in agile practices to build our software, as well as continuously delivering features and improvements to our users. Our team believes that a successful product is built by working with designers, product managers, and operators to understand the full cycle of software development.

The role of the Development Manager involves a balance of day-to-day personnel management, as well as managing development projects in a cross-functional manner. Development managers are not just managers, they often operate as technical leads for their project and are expected to commit code (though at a different pace to contributing engineers).

As Development Manager you have a number of responsibilities, but the primary one is to get new functionality into the hands of our customers. Your goal is deliver results to the customer, or market, and do everything necessary to achieve this. You must make sure the development team is able to work as efficiently as possible - advancing towards clear short and long term goals, and that nothing prevents them from doing their work. From the initial project scope, to deploying the product to customer sites, each step is your responsibility. You’ll work with other parts of the organization, including Product Management, Sales Engineering and Customer Success, as well as your own Engineering leadership team. You can, and should, delegate as much as you can, but be ready to check that things are being done as you want, and be ready to jump in if it is not.

Responsibilities

  • Own your product and software code base.
  • Work with Product Management to trade off new feature development vs sustaining engineering and architectural research.
  • Lead cross-functional development, working with an internal project manager to handle project initiatives, issue tracking, scoping and planning.
  • Drive the daily standup meeting with the team to ensure the project is on-track and that issues are resolved.
  • Work on technical designs and architectural initiatives on a project by project basis.
  • Manage individuals supporting their personal/career growth and development.
  • Develop team and individual goals/objectives that align to the department and company goals
  • Perform consistent and regular individual one on one meetings with team members.
  • Be a team player. You love to work with others to find the right solutions.
  • Operate a distributed high-performing team
  • Foster continued improvement in people, process,  and product
  • Lead, coach, and support team in work definition and planning. You will function as the team’s product ownerYou have technical ability to look ahead of the technical stacks and guide the team to stay current with the industry trend
  • Lead and coach the team in delivering the planned work, functioning as the team’s project manager
  • Relentlessly streamline the process to limit unplanned work. You are the key enabler for the constant reduction of toil
  • Facilitate team’s regular ceremonies.
  • Collaborate with peers and take the lead to assure stakeholder involvement and project outcomes.
  • Take a key role in incident response as an escalation point for command, communication, or scribing functions and continually improve the SRE program
  • Assume all human resource responsibilities for team members both full-time and contract

Qualifications

  • You love to lead others and make them better developers.
  • You love to code and deploy at scale.
  • You have a desire to make the Internet a safer place.
  • You approach problems from a product perspective, thinking through how the user will interact with what you're building.
  • You have strong communication skills. You ask questions, let others know when you need help, and tell others what you need.
  • You're a problem solver. You believe the best work is the result of finding the simplest solution to complex challenges.
  • You see the big picture. You understand how the code you write interacts with systems and services, both internally and externally.
  • You engineer great teams.
  • You are transparent - especially when you have made a mistake
  • You operate through just enough processes and seek to scale your team through judicious trial and error of process interfaces from team to team
  • You look for trouble, define it, and manage it. You ask for help before you get in over your head
  • Your technical background is deep enough to facilitate conversations in the team and represent team interests outside the team
  • You understand the collaborative nature of development, security, and operations and seek to foster better inter-team communication at all levels
  • You don’t have all the answers, but you know how to ask questions that motivate high-performing individuals to collaborate to obtain them
  • You have at least two years of managing a high-performing team in a distributed environment

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
