The Division
Orion Wine Software is the leading, proven provider of software for the wine industry with more than 300 customers worldwide. We offer solutions to help wineries manage their operational information, enabling them to improve productivity, reduce errors and save money. The Position
This role is primarily responsible for the design, development, and support of WIPS (Wine Inventory Production System), a mission-critical, transaction-driven application built on IBM i using Synon CA 2E. WIPS supports end-to-end wine production, including contract management, costing, work orders, and barrel tracking, and integrates with external ERP systems, laboratory analysis platforms, and barcode/RFID barrel scanners. The role also includes secondary IBM i administration responsibilities to ensure application stability and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Synon (CA 2E) Development — Primary
Application Design & Development
Design, develop, and enhance business applications using Synon CA 2E.
Create and maintain data models, functions, and action diagrams.
Generate, review, and maintain RPG/RPGLE code produced by Synon.
Application Maintenance & Support
Support and troubleshoot production issues in Synon- and RPG-based applications.
Perform impact analysis for changes to files, functions, and generated programs.
Collaborate with Orion management to translate requirements into Synon designs.
Modernization & Technical Improvement
Participate in incremental modernization efforts (e.g., RPGLE, embedded SQL, APIs, UI integration).
Improve coding standards, documentation, and development processes.
Assist with testing, deployment, and release management.
IBM i / AS/400 Administration — Secondary
System Operations & Support
Perform routine IBM i administration tasks, including job monitoring, subsystem management, and problem resolution.
Assist with PTF application, system saves, and restores.
Monitor system performance and storage utilization.
Security & Environment Management
Manage user profiles, object authorities, and basic security configuration.
Support auditing, backups, and disaster recovery processes.
Coordinate with senior admins or vendors for complex system-level changes.
Integration & Support
Support interfaces such as FTP/SFTP, printers, and third-party integrations.
Troubleshoot issues involving DB2 for i, jobs, and batch processing.
Required Qualifications
3+ years of hands-on experience with Synon CA 2E application development.
Strong understanding of IBM i (AS/400) architecture and development environment.
Proficiency in RPG or RPGLE, including reading and modifying Synon-generated code.
Solid experience with DB2 for i.
Ability to support production applications in a business-critical environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Synon CA 2E 8.4 experience.
IBM i 7.3 or later administration experience.
Exposure to modernization initiatives (RPG Free, SQL, web services).
Experience with ERP, manufacturing, or distribution systems.
Familiarity with Windows environments and basic networking concepts.
Soft Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with business and technical teams.
Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in legacy environments.
Willingness to balance development priorities with production support needs.
