The Position
We are seeking an experienced Azure Cloud Systems & Database Administrator to lead the lift and shift of customer’s on-premises and mixed cloud environments into Microsoft Azure. This includes migration of customer databases. This role will play a key part in defining migration strategies, executing pilot migrations for selected customers, and establishing a repeatable, scalable migration framework for future customers.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal engineering teams, legacy desktop application teams, modern Azure-based web application teams, and external third-party consultants to ensure secure, reliable, and well-architected database migrations.
Key Responsibilities
Lead overall infrastructure migrations to Azure
Design and execute database migration strategies from on-premises and hybrid environments to Azure
Evaluate and recommend Azure database services (Azure SQL, SQL Managed Instance, Azure Database for MySQL/PostgreSQL, etc.)
Work with third-party consultants to assess migration approaches and best practices
Ensure migrated databases support both:
Existing legacy desktop applications
New Azure-hosted web applications
Design secure, scalable Azure database architectures
Ensure high availability, performance, backup, and disaster recovery
Support hybrid connectivity between on-prem systems and Azure where required
Ensure data integrity, minimal downtime, and smooth cutover strategies
Define a standardized, repeatable migration process for future customers
Create migration runbooks, documentation, and technical guidelines
Identify risks, dependencies, and mitigation strategies for migrations
Collaborate with development, infrastructure, and support teams to operationalize migrations
Apply Azure security best practices (networking, identity, encryption, access control)
Ensure compliance with customer and organizational data protection requirements
Monitor and optimize database performance and cost post-migration
Required Skills & Experience
Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure
Proven experience migrating databases from on-premises or hybrid environments to Azure
Solid understanding of relational database platforms (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
Experience supporting legacy applications alongside modern cloud-based applications
Knowledge of Azure networking, identity (Entra ID/Azure AD), and security concepts
Familiarity with migration tools such as:
Azure Database Migration Service
Azure Data Sync
Backup/restore and replication-based approaches
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Ability to work with cross-functional teams and external vendors
Nice to Have
Azure certifications (Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, etc.)
Experience defining cloud standards and operating models
Exposure to DevOps/IaC (ARM, Bicep, Terraform)
Experience in SaaS or multi-tenant environments
Cost optimization and performance tuning experience in Azure
