Description
About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Supply Design

Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Supply Design reports to the Director of Power Systems in the SPARC team at CFS. You are responsible to lead and coordinate complex electrical design projects and interface with cross-function stakeholders while ensuring a high-quality design release that meets specifications, project timelines within budget allocated.

What you'll do:

  • Lead complex technical design activities to design, build and deliver IGBT / MOSFET power electronics based high current (kA levels) DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies applied for fusion power
  • Lead development of technical specifications for Medium Voltage & Low Voltage power electronics & electrical components
  • Design, model, simulate, analyze and validate power electronics circuits, magnetic components and control strategies for power supplies applied to highly inductive loads
  • Apply core electrical engineering knowledge and experience to design of Medium Voltage & Low Voltage system designs – specifically inductors, transformers and other high frequency magnetic equipment
  • Interface with cross functional teams with focus on high quality design and implementation
  • Lead critical procurement contracts & vendor coordination for power electronics and magnetics-based components, specifications and availability
  • Apply best electrical safety practices & compliance standards in design and implementation

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or) Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 10+ years of power electronics and magnetics experience
  • Proven track record in design and execution (system, protection, control & mechanical integration) of DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies at high currents (>1kA), low/medium voltage and >100kW power ratings
  • Proven experience with semiconductor devices (IGBTs, MOSFETs etc.)
  • Proven design experience of power supplies applied to inductors for low and high frequency applications
  • Proven experience in power supply control topologies for ramp up and ramp down of energy
  • Experience with switching power supply converter topologies such as the Buck, Boost, Half-Bridge, Full-Bridge etc.
  • Experience with design analysis tools such as PSPICE, MATLAB, MathCAD etc
  • Ability to lead a technical team from conception of idea till implementation in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with packaging design of power conversion equipment with Air or Water as the cooling media for thermal management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to conduct design reviews, organize / present results to both expert and non-technical audiences
  • Results driven and ability to embrace and convince stakeholders on a change in design direction in pursuit of a high-quality product release

Bonus points for:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering with focus on Power Conversion and/or magnetics (transformers, inductors etc.)
  • DC/DC Power supply design and validation for high current electromagnets
  • Effective control of stored energy in high current electromagnets is a plus
  • Experience with novel transformer design concepts for high power density applications with FEA (finite element analysis) in Ansys Maxwell is a plus
  • Experience in problem solving, root cause analysis and field containment actions
  • Experience with hands on prototype build, prototype testing and documentation of results is a plus
  • Experience with scaling up independent systems to a larger system to meet higher power requirements

Must-have requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Perform activities such as standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work outside of standard work hours as needed
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
