Precision Machining Operator - Off shift

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• All parts must be handled in proper manner as to prevent damage to the parts
• Measurement of critical dimensions of the part prior to processing to determine if the part will be within the blank specifications
• Responsible for controlling and verifying part thickness and figure. Parts are routinely measured to guarantee that all parts produced meet specification
• Understanding and utilizing the correct machine setup
• Tool set-up for various materials is performed according to established procedures. Flywheel is accurately balanced and head tilt adjustments made
• Process notes are maintained to record key manufacturing parameters and issues. Work instructions are followed. Work order report sheets are utilized to note process variation. First time yield is accurately documented
• The operator must be able to work independently to solve minor problems on a diamond flycutter; where appropriate the nature and solution to the problem should be reported to the supervisor or shift lead
• Production activities are wanded accurately. Quality documentation is completed as required and the machine maintenance and incident reports are completed when necessary
• Develop a good understanding for the QA procedures associated with testing of flycut diamond turned components.

Education & Experience

• Minimum 2 yr. experience
• BS/MS or equivalent degree.

Job Summary: Production of precision optical components using a single axis diamond turning flycut machine. The operator will be responsible for controlling and verify all critical component dimensions, finish quality, and optical figure for all parts machined. The machine setup requires critical adjustments of the diamond cutting tool and may require complex tooling configurations and metrology. Proper selection of tools, feeds and speeds, together with a trained eye for inspection is critical to the successful machining of mirrors. Precise optical and mechanical metrology must be performed the qualify parts and support set-up activities.
