Staff Product Designer, AI Search

Location: Remote - Canada, Vancouver, Remote - USA, Toronto, Calgary

Time Type: Full time

Job Description

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely.

We are transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice.

Summary:

We are seeking a Staff Product Designer to join our growing Product Design team. This role is available to candidates across Canada (excluding Quebec) and the US. If you are located near one of our hubs (Burnaby, Calgary, or Toronto), you will be expected to work in the office a minimum of twice per week on our designated Anchor Days.

Design plays a pivotal role at Clio, standing alongside Product and Engineering as one of the three pillars of our Research and Development organization. Our product designers work directly with customers to understand their behaviors, needs, and workflows. They champion thoughtful, high-quality experiences as we transform how lawyers and their teams serve their clients. If you’re focused on shipping value to customers with an opportunity to revolutionize an industry, you’ve found your next team.

About the role

The Platform team is a high-impact group building the shared foundations that power Clio. We tackle some of the most complex, systems-level problems — creating centralized tools for customers and reusable frameworks for product teams — so the rest of the organization can move faster with confidence. Right now, that includes building world-class search experiences powered by AI, and the foundational patterns that make intelligence work across the product.

As a Staff Product Designer, you'll lead strategy and end-to-end experience design for AI Search and be a key driver of how we design AI experiences across all of Clio. You’ll lead strategy and end-to-end experience design across a complex product area — from discovery and opportunity framing through launch and iteration. Ideal candidates thrive in ambiguity, turning deep customer understanding into clear direction, cohesive experiences, and measurable outcomes. You’ll partner closely with Product and Engineering leaders to set vision, raise the quality bar, and elevate other designers, including shaping AI experiences that are trustworthy, explainable, and appropriately controlled.

What you’ll do

  • Own end-to-end experience design for AI Search, from discovery and opportunity framing through prototyping, validation, and high-quality execution.

  • Define the interaction models, patterns, and guardrails for AI experiences across Clio, establishing the foundational design language that product teams build on.

  • Build deep customer intuition and systems understanding, translating complex workflows and constraints into clear direction and durable experience decisions.

  • Shape a compelling long-term experience vision for your problem space, bringing others along through storytelling and collaborative thinking.

  • Raise the quality bar across a broader product ecosystem through cohesive, accessible, and scalable experiences that push beyond “good enough.”

  • Drive consistency and leverage across teams by strengthening patterns, frameworks, and design system evolution beyond your immediate scope.

  • Help teams navigate ambiguity and make strong decisions through facilitation, decision framing, and proactive cross-functional collaboration.

  • Mentor and elevate other designers through constructive critique, coaching, and role-modelling strategic thinking and bar-raising craft.

  • Partner with the product design manager of your portfolio to uphold the quality and craft of design in your product area.

  • Contribute to design culture and org-wide initiatives through Staff-level forums and leadership beyond your immediate portfolio.

What you bring

  • 8+ years of Product Design experience, B2B SaaS experience is preferred, but not required.

  • Expertise designing AI-powered products end-to-end, with a strong understanding of how models work, where they fail, and how to design experiences that are honest about both.

  • Proven experience establishing AI design patterns and principles that scale across teams, not just shipping one-off AI features.

  • Experience working closely with AI/ML teams to shape product direction.

  • Proven ability to design scalable experiences across multiple customer segments and/or products (e.g., Solo, SMB, and Mid-Market).

  • Experience leading complex, cross-team initiatives and delivering cohesive solutions across interconnected systems.

  • Proven track record of shipping high-quality work that solves customer problems and moves key product metrics.

  • Strong product judgment and business acumen — able to connect customer needs to strategy, metrics, and roadmap decisions.

  • Deep mastery of UX craft, including complex interaction design, information architecture, usability, and visual design.

  • Advanced customer-centric practice, able to lead discovery and align multiple teams around customer needs and opportunities.

  • Proven systems thinking — able to design reusable frameworks and patterns that scale across teams and products.

  • Excellent presentation and storytelling skills.

  • Skilled facilitator who aligns leaders, drives decisions, and moves teams forward through ambiguity.

  • Strong cross-functional partner who drives execution across teams and workstreams.

  • Experience mentoring peers.

Bonus if you have…

  • Background working on AI platform or infrastructure products, not just AI features

  • Prior work on platform teams, with a track record of influencing how other designers build and ship.

This role is a backfill for an existing position.
