PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Salary to be commensurate with experience

The hiring rate for this position $40.58 - $50.72 per hour.

This is classified as VHBE (Variable Hour Benefit Eligible), where the selected candidate can work up to 40 hours per week. The selected candidate will be eligible to elect Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits, accrue paid time off, and receive 11 paid holidays.

Position Overview:

The Physical Infrastructure Engineer Senior centers on installing, maintaining, and supporting a wide range of security, surveillance, and communications systems. The role involves hands‑on technical work with low‑voltage infrastructure, security hardware, networking equipment, and related software. It requires strong troubleshooting skills, detailed documentation practices, and the ability to work effectively with coworkers, management, and customers. 

Work Location: This position is 100% in-person with frequent visits to various City of Aurora facilities.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs installation, preventative maintenance, functional testing, and operation of standard security and surveillance enclosures and equipment, access control, intrusion detection, and surveillance hardware and devices, servers and workstations, and typical network and communications equipment.
  • Creates documentation detailing the above 
  • Installs and terminates Copper and fiber data communications cable and connectivity 
  • Sets-up & programs security, access control, intrusion, audio visual and CCTV system communications network 
  • Performs system troubleshooting 
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. 

Education:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college 

Experience:

  • 3 years’ experience installing low voltage structured cabling systems 
  • Experience installing Milestone and AXIS cameras 
  • Experience developing test plans, managing test articles, supporting and leading subsystem design verification activities through system integration 
  • Incident, Problem, Change Management and Controls based on ITIL best practices, utilizing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of Communications Networks 
  • Basic Networking Principles 
  • System integration experience 
  • Previous experience working with government agencies 
  • Knowledge of the construction industry and coordinating with trades 
  • Knowledge of the Software House CCure Card Access system 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Valid Driver’s License 

Licenses and Certifications Preferred: 

  • Milestone (or equivalent) Certifications 
  • Microsoft Certifications 
  • CCure Certifications 
  • ITIL4 
  • Other industry recognized certification 

Knowledge: 

  • Understanding of standard concepts, practices and procedures within industry 
  • Knowledge of low voltage electronics, wiring, and color standards 
  • Knowledge of electrical color standards, connections, components (power supplies, resistors, etc. 
  • Knowledge of electrical and communications test equipment 
  • Proficient in MS Suite (Excel, Word and Visio) 
  • Basic understanding of electronics and Internet Protocol Addressing (IP Address). 
  • Experience with installation and configuration of Microsoft Windows based applications including MS SQL, access control, intrusion detection and video surveillance software. 
  • Basic Networking Principles

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Light physical work requires the ability to lift a maximum of 20 pounds.
  • Regular lifting and carrying of computer equipment.
  • Moderate walking and standing.
  • Vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents.
  • Hand/eye coordination for the operation of computer keyboard.
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with managers, employee users and citizens.

Work Environment: 

  • Works in a clean, comfortable environment.
  • System support issues may require working outside the office environment and in or around emergency response vehicles.
  • Due to the nature of this position, work will be on-site. 

Equipment Used: 

  • Standard business and professional tools and equipment including computers, laptop computers and mobile computing devices.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
