Java Microservices and Kafka Engineer - Assistant Vice President

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to join its Technology team and play a key role in designing, building, and delivering complex, high-performance application systems that directly support critical business operations. Working at an intermediate-to-senior level, you will combine deep Java engineering expertise with hands-on experience in microservices and cloud-native architectures to drive real, measurable outcomes across the software delivery lifecycle. This is a hybrid opportunity based in Pune, offering you the chance to shape technical solutions at a global scale.

 

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and deliver Java-based microservices and application systems that meet specific business and user requirements across the full software development lifecycle.
• Architect and implement scalable solutions using Java 8 or above, Spring Boot, and MongoDB, ensuring high availability and performance in production environments.
• Integrate messaging and event-streaming systems, including Kafka and MQ middleware, to enable reliable, real-time data processing across distributed platforms.
• Deploy and manage containerised applications using Docker, OpenShift, and other cloud technologies to support modern, cloud-native delivery practices.
• Lead technical analysis of complex application problems, evaluate system and business process requirements, and recommend effective engineering solutions.
• Identify and implement security controls and post-deployment safeguards to ensure system integrity, regulatory compliance, and sound risk management.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, serving as a subject matter expert and technical advisor to cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 7 to 12 years of hands-on experience in software application development, systems analysis, and end-to-end project delivery.
• Strong engineering proficiency in Java 8 or higher, with production-level experience building and maintaining Java Microservices architectures.
• Practical experience with Spring or Spring Boot frameworks for developing robust, scalable backend services.
• Proven expertise in MongoDB and NoSQL database design, querying, and integration within distributed application environments.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate Kafka or MQ-based messaging middleware into high-volume, event-driven systems.
• Working knowledge of cloud and containerisation technologies, including Docker, OpenShift, or equivalent containerisation platforms.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

 

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD tooling to support automated build, test, and deployment pipelines.
• Familiarity with stream processing frameworks such as Apache Flink, or caching technologies for performance optimisation.
• Exposure to UI technologies that complement full-stack delivery in enterprise application environments.
• Knowledge of consulting or project management methodologies that support structured planning and stakeholder engagement.
