The Opportunity:
12-16 Month Co-op/Internship starting in May 2026
The Optical Engineer Co-Op will contribute to the design, development, and testing of advanced optical networking systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a leading telecommunications company, working alongside experienced engineers on innovative projects.
Job Responsibilities
- You will push the boundaries of automation, speed, and data processing of an optical network using Python, and/or MATLAB.
- You will play a role in crafting, developing, testing, maintaining, and improving various algorithms used to control a system of optical hardware and an optical network simulation software.
- You will develop instrumentation and characterization routines to analyze signal and noise propagation physics of optical modems and line systems.
- You will collaborate with a multi-functional team of designers, develop interactive web interfaces for your instrumentation routines and perform version control using Git.
The Must Haves
- Working towards completion of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Physics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, or other similar languages, with experience in networking protocols such as REST, or gNMI.
- Exposure Linux development environments.
- Foundational knowledge of physics, optics, and communications theory
Pay Range: The hourly pay range for this position is $25.00 - $34.00
Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.
