Change.org is searching for a Staff Software Engineer to deliver strategic impact through technical excellence, innovation, and leadership, shaping the direction of engineering initiatives and driving organizational success.

In the last decade in Mexico, from the mobilization against the Maya train to the campaign to increase vacation days, many nationwide movements were created on Change.org. From the campaign Cáncer Warriors to ask for the release of the elephant Eli , dozens of local, national and international victories are happening every day thanks to the power of our users who are changing our country.

Technical Leadership:

  • Aptitude to breakdown product requirements to create plans that allow for full team achievement.
  • You assess end-to-end (user to database), have opinions and experience building impactful solutions that delight users.

Mentoring/Coaching:

  • Develop a concise knowledge of our architecture and provide support and guidance to other engineers with design, coding, and pull-requests.
  • Promote the growth of other engineers through regular feedback and pairing sessions
  • Share knowledge widely to improve engineering best practices across the department

Coding skills:

  • Full stack with experience working effectively at scale
  • Mastery with different technologies, languages and frameworks in all layers of the webstack, from frontend to backend with an emphasis on Nodejs, Ruby on Rails, Elixir, React, Javascript/Typescript, GraphQL
  • Extensive experience with SQL-based databases, able to define and optimize data schemas
  • Experience with infrastructure as code technologies like Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS
  • Knowledge in not only using but also innovating and evolving existing technologies and frameworks

Planning & Execution:

  • Aptitude to not only deconstruct projects into well-defined action plans but also to strategize and architect complex systems from scratch, taking into account scalability, reliability, and performance considerations
  • Accountable for overseeing the development of multiple projects concurrently and ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities
  • Deliver user-facing software iteratively: by first building an MVP, and only scaling once we validate using experimentation and user data

Architecture & Design, Performance:

  • Drive initiatives to identify and drive architectural improvements, conducting in-depth performance analysis and optimization, to setting standards for system quality and reliability across the organization that support long-term business goals and drive technical excellence
  • Extensive expertise in designing and implementing high-performance, scalable, and resilient systems
  • Be a driver for system quality

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Proactively communicate with stakeholders, including executives, product managers, and cross-functional teams
  • Partner and collaborate effectively across functions such as product, design, devops, QA, analytics and with colleagues located in different timezones
  • Advocate for the engineering team's needs and priorities, representing their interests in decision-making processes and strategic discussions
  • Lead by example in fostering an open, inclusive and transparent culture

Target experience:

  • 5-8 years of experience with full stack web service development
  • 3 years of experience in at least one language that we use at Change: Nodejs, Rails, Elixir
  • 3 years of experience in frontend technologies like React/JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Experience with infrastructure as code technologies like Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS
  • Experience developing data access layers using RESTful APIs and GraphQL
  • English fluency (Minimum B2)

This is a remote role available in two different formats: either a full-time employee paid MX$93,500/month gross and hired through a third-party local entity, or as a contractor paid MX$121,500/month gross. The benefits available, and structures of the roles, are different. We're happy to go over the details in our first call.

Our compensation philosophy is based on pay equity. All of our salaries are determined before we launch a role – they are based on a predetermined salary scale, the level on that scale and the cost of labor for that location. 

Our evaluation process is as follows:

  • 30 min Recruiter screen
  • 60 min interview with our VP of Engineering & Mexico Site Lead
  • 2 hour take home exercise
  • 2.5 hour virtual onsite
  • 30 min interview with our CTO
