CFD Research is looking to fill our intern class for the Summer of 2026. The program runs 8-10 weeks over the summer and has flexible start and finish dates based on candidate's availability (typically mid-May to August).
Each CFD Research Internship has both a mentor and technical manager to help guide them on their research project over the summer. In addition to challenging technical work, CFD Research's program offers professional development and social activities designed to help our interns have a great, all-around summer internship experience.
As part of this summer internship, you will join a small, multidisciplinary R&D team developing advanced AI/ML solutions at the intersection of computer vision and remote sensing. You will work closely with an experienced mentor and supportive team to contribute to research and development efforts in object detection, segmentation, and spatial reasoning.
This internship provides hands-on experience across the machine learning lifecycle, from data exploration and model development to evaluation and integration within real-world software environments. Interns will contribute to research prototypes that could ultimately transition to software products.
What You’ll Work On:
- Perform exploratory data analysis on image, video, or multimodal sensor datasets
- Assist in training, tuning, and evaluating deep learning models for object detection, semantic segmentation, and/or 3D reconstruction
- Support development of robust neural network pipelines that run efficiently on high-dimensional image, video, and vector datasets
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative performance evaluation of models
- Help optimize models for performance on GPU-enabled systems
- Participate in technical discussions and collaborate within a multidisciplinary R&D team
Basic Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance (eligibility required)
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in: Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related STEM discipline
- Experience programming in Python
- Coursework or research experience in machine learning, computer vision, or related fields
- Graduate students or undergraduates with prior research experience are preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
- Familiarity with object detection, segmentation, reconstruction, or image processing methods
- Experience working in Linux environments
- Exposure to GPU acceleration (CUDA) or performance optimization concepts
- Experience using Git for version control
