The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.
The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) is seeking a Research Programmer/Analyst to join their team! Reporting to Professor Lorraine Levin, you will be responsible for:
- Using large language models (LLM) automatic speech recognition (ASR) and other natural language processing (NLP) techniques to automate the annotation of corpora of linguistic fieldwork, including morphological segmentation and interlinear glosses
- Creating novel combinations of LLM, NLP, and ASR to achieve performance that surpasses the state of the art in morphological segmentation and interlinear glossing
- Designing and conducting suites of experiments for determining which methods and models are most suitable for the task under varying circumstances such as the amount of data available for training
- Assisting in a human-in-the-loop process of corpus creation for three languages of Mexico (Mixtec, Totonac, and Nahuatl), resulting in archival-quality linguistic documentation
- Formulating hypothesis about best models to apply to the task
- Meeting with the Principal Investigator twice per week to discuss progress and plans
- Keeping detailed notes on weekly progress
- Keeping project resources organized in appropriate repositories
- Inventing new modelling techniques
- Carrying out experiments where various models are applied to data
- Reporting results of experiments.
- Performing error analysis
- Writing articles for peer review
- Assisting with corpus creation and corpus manipulation.
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information system or related field required ; Masters’s Degree preferred.
Required Experience :
- 1-3 years of prior research experience in ASP, NLP, and/or LLMs, specifically as applied to low-resource languages, morphological segmentation and interlinear glossing.
- Previous experience with peer reviewed research, formulation of hypothesis, design methodology, execution of experiments and reporting of results.
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

- A remote work option may be available for candidates with residency in Boulder, CO. All approved remote work arrangements are subject to an approved remote work agreement (RWA) as part of any offer of employment.
- In accordance with the pay transparency legislation set forth by Colorado, the corresponding salary range for this position, if placed in Colorado ranges between $77,000 and $95,000.
- Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
