Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a program and project manager to support the university’s data initiatives. Data@CMU is a collaborative program initiated by the Office of the CIO and Institutional Effectiveness and Planning in partnership with campus administrative and academic leaders and partners. This collaborative effort aims to eliminate data silos and develop services to enable the strategic use of our institutional data to make informed decisions and enhance growth.

Our projects ensure that decision-makers have access to timely, accurate information by focusing on dataset curation, data pipeline optimization, and dashboard development. We champion data governance and quality, fostering an environment where university-wide cross- functional teams thrive through proactive engagement and collaboration. Our mission is to elevate data-informed success through precision and collaboration, building a foundation for high-performance data products.

In this role, you will be responsible for handling multiple simultaneous data-related projects and working closely with technology teams and campus partners on the execution and delivery of the Data@CMU portfolio. The project manager is accountable for the day-to-day technical and programmatic leadership throughout the projects’ lifecycles from conception through development and implementation.

The ideal candidate will have excellent project management skills, including attention to detail and the ability to distill sophisticated concepts into relevant tasks and achievements. Success will hinge upon your ability to be collaborative and proficient in leading and motivating teams to collective success while supporting the goals and vision of the overall data program. This includes being able to communicate the business and technology-related requirements that will further the growth of the community.

Example responsibilities include:

  • Plans, monitors, and handles projects from initiation to completion.
  • Prepares project charters and plans, which include definition scope, resources, and schedule.
  • Identifies needed resources based on the magnitude and necessity of the project.
  • Prioritizes and revises priorities and plans as appropriate to achieve objectives.
  • Ensures adequate communication is maintained regarding all project status and priorities.
  • Leads a team, establishes project governance, and coordinates project staff.
  • Builds and handles a budget.

Skills and experience:

  • Proficiency with project management and project management software (e.g. Jira )
  • Proficiency in running Data related projects
  • Experience leading complex projects and collaborating with multiple cross-functional teams
  • Experience with change management and quality assurance
  • Experience working as a project manager on one or more projects.
  • Experience with standard Software Development Lifecycle practices and Agile development preferred
  • Excellent leadership, reasoning, decision-making, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organization, planning, and problem-solving skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • 8-10 years of relevant project management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
