Overview

Joint Commission seeks a highly skilled and motivated Sr Healthcare Data Analyst to support a growing portfolio of research and analytics initiatives that inform quality improvement, accreditation strategy, certification programs, and system-level learning. Working directly with the Vice President and Chief Research Officer as well as Research Scientists, help prepare and analyze complex health care datasets and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, technical memos, and other materials for internal and external stakeholders. This is a hands-on role requiring technical rigor, independent execution, and a strong sense of mission.

Responsibilities

  • Independently prepare, clean, merge, and manage healthcare datasets from a variety of sources, including patient-level data, healthcare organization-level data, accreditation and certification records, and administrative claims (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid).
  • Conduct complex statistical analyses using established and novel methods under the direction of research leadership; contribute to reproducible and well-documented analytic workflows.
  • Take ownership of analytical deliverables for specific research objectives within larger studies.
  • Use statistical programming languages (e.g., R, Stata, Python) to create summary statistics, data visualizations, files for analysis, and analytic tables for use in internal strategy documents, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Extract and manipulate data from relational databases using SQL or other tools as required.
  • Develop, maintain, and document GitHub-based analytical workflows, including version-controlled code, quality assurance processes, and technical documentation to support reproducible healthcare research and analytics.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of data sources, definitions, programming steps, and quality checks to ensure transparency and reproducibility.
  • Coordinate with research scientists and other stakeholders to ensure alignment of analytic deliverables with study objectives and timelines.
  • Lead analysis of defined analytic tasks within research projects with guidance from research scientists.
  • Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, technical memos, data briefs, and presentation materials for internal decision-making and external dissemination.
  • Develop and deliver presentations on data acquisition, data quality, analytical progress, project milestones, and study findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, translating complex information into clear, actionable recommendations that support project management and organizational decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as biostatistics, statistics, economics, epidemiology, health services research, public health, health informatics, data science, computer science, mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related discipline, with at least 5 years of relevant healthcare research experience; OR a Master's degree in biostatistics, statistics, economics, epidemiology, health services research, public health, health informatics, data science, computer science, mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related discipline, with at least 2 years of relevant healthcare research experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in statistical programming languages such as R, Stata, or Python, including experience working within modern analytics development environments such as RStudio and Visual Studio Code to support reproducible, collaborative, and well-documented research workflows.
  • Advanced database management skills in extracting and managing data from structured databases using SQL via SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Experience building, maintaining, or validating analytical data pipelines and large-scale healthcare datasets.
  • Experience using version control systems (e.g., Git/GitHub) and reproducible research practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, adapt to, and effectively apply new programming, analytics, and database management tools.
  • Experience working with real-world healthcare data such as health outcomes, claims, or quality reporting metrics.
  • Knowledge of healthcare outcomes research principles and study design.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to reproducible, well-documented analytics.
  • Experience supporting research using causal inference methods (e.g., difference-in-differences, instrumental variables).
  • Experience contributing to or co-authoring peer-reviewed journal publications.
  • Experience mentoring junior data analysts.
  • Experience translating complex analytic findings for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to collaborate across projects and adapt to evolving priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, independently drive analytical work forward, and effectively prioritize competing projects, tasks, and deadlines in a collaborative research environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Advanced proficiency in R, including experience building reproducible analytical workflows, managing large healthcare datasets, and producing publication-quality statistical analyses and visualizations.
  • Experience developing and maintaining analytical workflows across multiple programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Stata, and SQL), including the ability to translate methods and validate results between platforms.
  • Experience utilizing cloud-based data engineering and analytics platforms, such as Microsoft Fabric, to support large-scale healthcare data management, workflow automation, and research analytics.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, large language models) to improve analytic productivity, documentation, quality assurance, and workflow development.
  • Experience using and critically evaluating generative AI tools, with the ability to validate analytical outputs, code, and research materials for accuracy, completeness, and methodological soundness.
  • Prior work in a mission-driven organization or collaborative research environment.
  • Application of machine learning techniques or AI tools to research questions.
