Director of Energy Systems
Department: Physical Systems
Location: Los Alamitos
Employment Type: FullTime
About Brelle
“Energy for what moves us” defines our mission at Brelle. Based in California, Brelle engineers next-generation platforms for supercars and superbikes, working alongside high-performance brands in the US and Europe. Our innovations are built on a novel battery pack architecture, a full-stack software platform, and automated manufacturing. Joining the team means working on making electric vehicles—on the road and on the racetrack—lighter, more engaging, safer, and capable of charging in minutes.
Our engineering teams are structured like small Skunkworks teams – nimble, cross-functional, and technical. Engineers are encouraged to explore new concepts and materials and expected to rapidly go from idea to prototype.
About the Role
As Director of Energy Systems, you will own Brelle’s technical strategy and execution across battery engineering and system architecture. You will guide a cross-functional team spanning mechanical, electrical, thermal, and simulation disciplines, and drive the key design decisions that shape our next-generation products.
This role blends deep technical judgment with team leadership. We’re looking for someone who has shipped production battery systems—ideally in high-performance environments—and understands how to build and scale a world-class engineering team.
Role Scope & Ownership
Own the development of new module and pack architectures, including electromechanical systems, thermal management, safety systems, DFM, and product-level interfaces
Make architecture trade-offs across energy density, thermal performance, weight, cost, safety, and manufacturability
Define and maintain the battery systems technology charter, aligning technical investments with Brelle’s product roadmap
Plan and manage the annual budget for the energy systems team
Technical Leadership & Delivery
Establish engineering processes, design standards, and review cadences that embed safety and quality into the foundation of rapid iteration cycles
Own technical program management for battery development—setting milestones, managing dependencies, and ensuring timely delivery of hardware and analysis
Lead DFMEA, DVP&R, and design release processes through production launch
Ensure designs meet certification and homologation requirements
Team & Leadership
Build and scale a world-class engineering team by attracting, developing, and retaining exceptional talent who thrive in a high-performance environment
Foster a culture of technical excellence, intellectual honesty, and relentless improvement—where engineers are empowered to challenge assumptions and pursue novel solutions at rapid pace
Preferred Qualifications
10+ years of experience in battery pack/module design or powertrain development
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
Deep technical expertise across battery system architecture: cell integration, thermal management, HV safety, and structural design
Advanced CAD proficiency (CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks) with the ability to engage at the design detail level
Strong understanding of DFM across multiple processes: injection molding, stamping, casting, composites, machining
Deep knowledge of materials science and advanced manufacturing processes
Experience at high-performance or motorsport programs (Formula E, hypercar, aerospace) where weight, thermal performance, and reliability are pushed to extremes
You Are...
Fundamentally Curious – You break complex problems down to first principles and are energized by hard problems worth solving at scale
A Builder of Exceptional Teams – You attract world-class talent, set exceptionally high standards, and create an environment where engineers do the best work of their careers
Autonomous and Decisive – You take ownership of ambiguity, make informed calls, and drive execution with conviction. You empower your team to do the same, creating a culture of accountability and bias for action
