WHY BOX NEEDS YOU? 

The Messaging Platform team provides the foundational infrastructure that supports many of Box’s core products, like our public Events API, Box Drive, and Box Canvas, and features such as pushing real-time notifications to places like our web app and connected external clients. Our customers rely on us to reliably serve hundreds of thousands of requests and process millions of events per second.

This year, we completed our development and migration for user Events API traffic out of Box’s legacy Monolith and into a new Microservices Infrastructure service, which is about 25% of our peak site traffic. This is one of the most significant migrations of functionality from Monolith to MI in recent times and beyond significant cost saving, it was critical in proving out Box’s ecosystem of core microservices were ready to fully scale. With our legacy infrastructure now fully cloud-native and migrated to Google’s Cloud Platform, our team is focused on designing and building the next generation architecture for messaging applications while planning for those migrations and improving infrastructure and developer efficiencies.

We are in the early phases of the software development lifecycle for our next generation of services and are regularly identifying new use cases across internal and external teams that could be enabled by our platform. This role will the opportunity to work with other teams from the initial ideation phase through delivery for their needs and to directly help shape our team’s roadmap through that work.

WHAT YOU'LL DO? 

• You will play a key role in architecting and developing the next generation of messaging systems at Box, as well as work across our existing services to deliver new features and variety of tech stacks to improve infrastructure and developer efficiency
• Implement new services and use cases while phasing out the old ones
• Provide guidance to client engineering teams on how best to take advantage of our near-real-time interfaces
• Drive wider adoption of our near-realtime interfaces across engineering by identifying compatible use cases
• Develop and implement initiatives to ensure our systems consistently meet availability, performance, and reliability SLOs

WHO YOU ARE:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field
• 5+ years of professional software development experience
• Strong understanding of common algorithms, data structures and code design principles
• Strong grasp of high-scale distributed systems
• Familiarity with Java/Scala, MySQL, Pub/Sub, BigQuery
• Passionate about database scale and performance challenges
• Strong sense of ownership, persistence and drive, strong communication
