Principal PPS Engineer 

 

The Principal PPS Engineer provides expertise in process and plant safety (PPS) and pressure safety of chemical units in order to ensure safe and reliable plant operations. They must be able to ensure regulatory and company compliance to secure the site’s license to operate. The incumbent actively contributes to the continuous safety progress and evolution by providing specific PPS and pressure safety knowledge.

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Principal PPS Engineer, are to:  

  • Lead/moderate interdisciplinary PPS teams and document results within the systematic safety review or management of change workflow in order to design adequate safety concepts for existing or new process units of mid-size complexity;
  • Comply with internal and external PPS directives and regulations;
  • Ability to understand and discuss the Bayer HAZOP methodology at a detailed level;
  • Develop and document explosion prevention and protection concepts (hazardous area classification, ignition source analysis, mitigation concepts);
  • Support the development of PPS skills and capabilities within site technical and project teams;
  • Lead capital project and MOC safety reviews, including Basic Safety Reviews and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews;
  • Actively participate in PSSR walkthroughs to confirm the correct implementation of safety measures prior to startup;
  • Lead or participate in incident investigations and support continuous improvement of safety concepts in Bayer production units;
  • Become adept at facility siting evaluations. Identify and lead cross functional projects that improve process safety strategy and execution for the KC site;
  • Support / lead internal working groups / panels in the development of tools and know-how for the PPS community;
  • Ability to constantly re-priortize individual tasks based on sitewide priorities;
  • Develop and drive site projects that improve process safety by collaborating with key stakeholders;
  • Participate in Bayer-wide initiatives related to process safety;
  • This role requires Pressure Safety awareness training and regular involvement with the Bayer Pressure Safety Community to effectively support aspects of the overall pressure safety program;
  • The role will participate as needed in contingency reviews and will assess the overall health of the pressure safety program through KPI reviews;
  • Assist in site troubleshooting activities related to pressure safety;
  • Maintains and improves the format, quality, location, and use of the PSDR package as a master document which provides engineering basis for all relief systems on site.

 

 WHO YOU ARE

  Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree;
  • Theoretical and practical PPS and pressure safety expertise acquired through plant experience or E&T-PPS (or equivalent department / business);
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written);
  • Within the first 12 months of hiring, the incumbent must complete identified pressure safety training (8 hour refresher training and online PSDR training) as well as actively participate in the Pressure Safety Community;
  • Candidate should have an extensive knowledge of PSM/RMP program elements and requirements;
  • Collaborates: works cooperatively with others, good leadership skills Integrity: ability to see an improvement opportunity and develop it into a sustainable program.

Preferred:

  • Engineering degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or similar technical disciplines; Engineering Master Degree;
  • Bachelor 8+ years, Masters 6+ years, Ph.D. 4+ years;
  • Experience in performing, facilitating and documenting process hazard analysis using detailed, systematic approaches;
  • Extensive knowledge of pressure safety codes and ability to do pressure safety packages, including calculations;
  • Core competencies of incumbent according to Bayer Competency Model: Minimum of 7 years "hands-on" production experience in a PSM/RMP regulated facility.
