Department: Audio Core
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Singapore, Singapore, Hybrid
About BandLab
Make music sound better for millions of creators
The team you'll join
Most of us are musicians, producers or audio nerds, and we care a lot about music. Conversations about a feature usually involve several people and disciplines. You'll be an important voice in these discussions, not just someone who receives tickets.
What you'll work on
Day to day, you'll:
- Design and implement audio DSP algorithms. Work on effects, instruments and analysis tools such as:
- Filters and EQs
- Dynamics processors, limiters and multiband compressors
- Reverbs, delays and modulation effects
- Guitar amp and cabinet models
- Pitch detection and correction
- Time-stretching and pitch-shifting
- Noise reduction
- Automatic mastering
- Synthesisers, samplers and music-analysis features
- Build and optimise the real-time engine. Work on the audio graph, mixer, transport, recording and playback, and MIDI so that they stay glitch-free and low-latency on many kinds of devices.
- Own the cross-platform API and business logic. Design the platform-agnostic logic that every client relies on to create and edit songs and mixes: tracks, regions, MIDI, automation, patterns and effect chains. This lets iOS, Android and Web teams build on one consistent, well-tested foundation.
- Shape new product features from the start. Work with product, design and client teams to turn creative ideas into technically sound, shippable audio features.
- Raise the engineering bar. Contribute to automated tests, including audio regression tests against reference renders. Also help with CI across all target platforms, static analysis, sanitizers, profiling and code review.
- Prototype and explore. Build test apps, command-line tools and plugin prototypes to try new ideas quickly before they reach users.
About you
Must have
- Strong, hands-on DSP experience (our top priority). You have designed and implemented audio processing algorithms yourself, and not only integrated existing libraries. You're fluent with:
- Digital filter design
- Frequency-domain processing (FFT, STFT, overlap-add, convolution)
- Dynamics, modulation and time-based effects
- Resampling, interpolation and aliasing
- You can move from a paper or a prototype to an efficient production implementation.
- Real-time audio programming expertise. You understand the real-time audio problem space well. You know the general OS models in terms of audio architecture and constraints. You know how to make CPU use predictable, and how to profile and fix dropouts.
- Solid modern C++ experience (C++17/20) in performance-critical code.
- Experience building multiplatform music or audio applications. In particular, you've written platform-agnostic business logic, such as the model and editing operations behind a DAW, sequencer or mixing app, and used it from several client platforms.
- Good engineering practices. You write testable, maintainable code, take testing seriously and work well with version control, code review and CI.
Nice to have
- Experience with mobile or desktop audio stacks (eg: Core Audio, AAudio) and/or Web Audio and WebAssembly
- Experience with cross-language bindings (e.g. Djinni, JNI, Objective-C++, Emscripten)
- SIMD optimisation and ARM/NEON performance work
- Audio plugin development (e.g. JUCE, VST3/AU)
- Music information retrieval, pitch/tempo/key analysis, or ML-based audio processing
- MIDI, synthesis and sampler design
- Being a musician, producer or audio engineer yourself
How you work
- Autonomous and proactive. You can take an ambiguous problem, break it down and drive it to a result. You don't wait to be told what to do; you suggest ideas, improvements and new directions.
- Collaborative. You enjoy technical discussions, can explain DSP ideas to non-specialists and are open to other people's views.
- Willing to share knowledge. You like mentoring, writing clear documentation and helping the team grow. You're also happy to learn from others.
- Focused on the product. You care about how features sound and feel to real users, not only about technical elegance.
Location & Benefits
Benefits:
- Healthcare, dental insurance
- Annual bonus
- Hybrid work arrangement
- Paid annual leave, sick leave, childcare leave, volunteer leave and maternity leave
- BandLab Technologies staff discount
