AI Automation Specialist (Claude & Accounting Workflows)

Location: Remote

About the Client

We’re helping an innovative accounting technology business find an AI Automation Specialist to help build the next generation of AI-powered bookkeeping and accounting systems.

The business is investing heavily in AI to transform how accounting firms operate—leveraging intelligent agents, workflow automation, and modern AI technologies to reduce manual work, improve accuracy, and enable accountants to focus on higher-value advisory services.

This is a unique opportunity to help shape the architecture of an AI-first accounting platform from the ground up.

The Role

We're looking for a highly capable AI Automation Specialist who can design, build, and continuously improve AI-powered bookkeeping and accounting workflows.

This is not a traditional automation role. We're looking for someone who understands both technology and business processes—someone who can identify automation opportunities, architect intelligent solutions, and rapidly turn ideas into production-ready systems.

You'll work closely with leadership to develop scalable AI agents, integrate business systems, and build automation frameworks that can evolve into a commercial AI platform.

Role Details

Commitment: Full-Time

Working Hours: Australian working hours

Location: Fully Remote

Engagement: Independent Contractor

Start Date: ASAP

Monthly Rate: US$1400-1600 (can be higher, depending on level of experience)

What You'll Do

AI Agent Development (Core Focus)

  • Design, build, deploy, and maintain AI-powered bookkeeping and accounting agents using Claude and related technologies
  • Develop intelligent workflows that automate repetitive accounting and operational processes
  • Build modular, multi-agent systems that work together as a scalable platform
  • Continuously identify opportunities to expand automation and improve business efficiency
  • Rapidly translate business ideas into practical, production-ready AI solutions

Accounting Workflow Automation

  • Build AI systems to automate:
    • Transaction coding and categorization
    • Bookkeeping workflows
    • Receipt and document processing
    • Data extraction and validation
    • Client information gathering
    • Request-for-information (RFI) workflows
    • Reporting processes
    • Time recording and billing support
    • Workflow escalation and exception management
  • Design human-in-the-loop workflows where AI performs initial processing and accounting professionals review exceptions
  • Develop confidence scoring, audit trails, and continuous learning mechanisms to improve AI accuracy over time

Systems Integration & Platform Development

  • Integrate AI solutions with accounting platforms including:
    • Xero
    • Xero Practice Manager
    • MYOB
    • QuickBooks
    • Zoho
    • Odoo
  • Build integrations with CRM systems, document management platforms, communication tools, APIs, and internal business systems
  • Design secure, scalable, and reliable automation infrastructure with appropriate governance and access controls
  • Support the ongoing evolution of an AI-first accounting platform intended for long-term commercial use

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Work directly with leadership to prioritize, prototype, and deliver new AI capabilities
  • Participate in planning sessions and iterative product development
  • Recommend new automation opportunities and process improvements proactively
  • Contribute to the long-term product vision, architecture, and AI strategy

What We're Looking For

Must-Haves

  • Proven experience building AI-powered workflows, agents, or automation systems (at least 2-3 years)
  • Strong experience with Claude and Claude Code
  • Experience designing and deploying agent-based or multi-agent systems
  • Strong understanding of LLMs, prompt engineering, and AI application development
  • Experience building practical AI solutions for real business environments
  • Hands-on experience with Python, APIs, workflow automation platforms, and system integrations
  • Strong understanding of workflow architecture, process optimization, and systems design
  • Ability to independently design, build, deploy, and continuously improve automation solutions
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience within accounting, bookkeeping, financial services, or fintech
  • Experience automating accounting or finance workflows
  • Experience with Xero, Xero Practice Manager, QuickBooks, MYOB, Zoho, or Odoo
  • Experience building SaaS products or internal business platforms
  • Experience developing AI products intended for commercialization
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, databases, webhooks, and event-driven architectures

Ideal Candidate Profile

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Thinks beyond individual automations and designs complete business systems
  • Naturally identifies opportunities to improve operational efficiency
  • Enjoys solving complex business problems through AI and automation
  • Can move quickly from concept to working solution
  • Balances technical excellence with commercial thinking
  • Operates independently with a high level of ownership and accountability
  • Is comfortable working directly with leadership in a fast-moving environment
  • Communicates technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Takes a practical, outcomes-focused approach to AI rather than building technology for its own sake

If you enjoy building intelligent systems that create measurable business impact, you'll thrive in this role.

  2. Client Interview
  3. Technical Assessment (if deemed necessary)
