The Opportunity:

Avantor is searching for a talented and passionate Lead Data Catalog (Alation) Engineer to join our growing data team!
In this role, you will play a critical role in building and maintaining a robust data catalog using Alation. You will collaborate closely with data engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure our data is discoverable, trusted, and understood by everyone in the organization.

About the Role:

  • Design, develop, and maintain data catalogs, lineages, glossaries, and business definitions within Alation.
  • Design and maintain integrations with other data storages (S3, Snowflake) and BI/Analytical tools (PowerBI, Qlikview)
  • Collaborate and lead data engineers and subject matter experts to ensure accurate and comprehensive data representation in the Alation catalog.
  • Troubleshooting Alation issues
  • Implement and enforce data governance best practices within Alation to promote data quality and consistency.
  • Configure Alation connectors to automate data ingestion and updates from various data sources.
  • Architect, develop and maintain custom workflows and automations within Alation to streamline data catalog management processes.
  • Create user guides, tutorials, and training materials to promote Alation adoption among business users.
  • Analyze user behavior and usage patterns within Alation to identify areas for improvement and optimize the user experience.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest features and functionalities of Alation and advocate for continuous improvement.
  • Participate in code reviews and collaborate with other developers to maintain a high-quality Alation configuration.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand their data discovery needs and translate them into actionable configurations within Alation.

This role will be a full-time position based out of our Pune/Coimbatore office.

Our Team:

The Avantor data team partners with Avantor leadership teams to drive data-driven decision making. We empower leadership by providing a trusted and discoverable data landscape through a well-maintained Alation catalog.

What we're looking for:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience working in Data projects, 5+ years of experience working with data governance and data cataloging tools.
  • Experience with SQL and familiarity with data warehousing concepts (dimensional modeling) is a plus.

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of data governance principles and best practices.
  • Experience with data modeling and metadata management concepts.
  • Proficiency in working with cloud-based platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work.
  • Experience with scripting languages (Python, Shell) is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Alation or similar data cataloging tools.
  • Experience with data governance frameworks (Patalon, Collibra Governance Cloud).
  • Experience with API integrations and data automation tools.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
