Job Description

Job Description

Overview

We are looking for motivated engineers with strong analytical capability and an interest in early-stage engineering development to join our expanding WRMP29 Option Engineering team. In this role, you will work directly with UK colleagues to deliver high quality engineering support across multiple UK water companies.

The work focusses on concept development of water resource options, GIS analysis, generation of cost and carbon metrics, and preparation of technical option appraisal documents. You will be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment that integrates engineering, environmental assessment, carbon appraisal and strategic planning.

This is an opportunity to contribute to significant programmes, influence future water supply investment decisions, and develop specialist skills in UK water resource planning.

Your role

Concept Development

  • Work collaboratively with UK teams and clients to develop coherent raw-to-tap water resource option concepts.
  • Apply creative engineering thinking to refine options, suggest mitigations, and adapt concepts to regional characteristics.
  • Ensure consistent application of assumptions across option portfolios and provide/receive reasoned technical challenge.
  • Engage with multi-disciplinary colleagues to maintain coherence between engineering, environmental and cost/carbon elements.

GIS & Spatial Analysis

  • Support spatial representation of options using GIS platforms (e.g., QGIS).

Metric Generation (Cost, Carbon & Decision-Making)

  • Use established client tools and AtkinsRéalis workflows to prepare cost estimates (CAPEX, OPEX, whole life cost, NPV).
  • Undertake carbon assessments (operational and embodied), including monetisation of carbon.
  • Generate WRMP-specific decision metrics required for option comparison and selection.

Reporting

  • Support preparation of technical proformas and reporting for each project stage, incorporating engineering assumptions and datasets.

 About you

  • You should have a degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resources, or a related discipline. Experience in the UK water sector or WRMP processes is advantageous but not essential.
  • Appreciation of raw/potable water transfer systems, pumping, pipelines, storage and treatment at a conceptual level.
  • Experience of engineering appraisal, early-stage feasibility work or water sector projects.
  • Ability to evaluate engineering viability, risks and assumptions in concept stage options.
  • Basic working knowledge of QGIS, Microsoft Excel and SharePoint; comfortable working with large datasets.
  • A clear and confident communicator capable of contributing to technical discussions internally within the project team, and externally with client organisations.
  • Positive, proactive mindset with the ability to work in an agile, fast paced environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing scopes and manage multiple tasks in parallel.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative appropriate to grade.
  • Interest in collaborating closely with major UK water companies and influencing strategic decisions.
  • Meaningful and varied work that contributes to resilient water systems in the UK.
  • Hybrid working with flexibility to balance work and personal commitments.
  • Access to formal training, mentorship and opportunities for professional development.
  • Support towards professional accreditation and chartership, including training and paid membership fees.
  • A collaborative and inclusive work environment that values diverse perspectives.
