The Avionics team is responsible for all aspects of the electrical systems and hardware on Astrolab’s electric rover vehicles and ground support equipment. We work collaboratively with all teams at Astrolab to provide exceptionally capable and reliable electronics to serve our missions.

The Sr. Manager of Power Avionics will lead the Power Electrical Engineering team and participate in all aspects of the development and test of power electronics for Astrolab rovers. The ideal candidate has 4+ years in spacecraft power electronics design and 4+ years of experience in leading teams through power electronics development including schematic capture, PCB layout, testing, and delivery. 

This position will report to the Director of Avionics Engineering and will be based in our Hawthorne, CA office. 

What you'll do:

  • Own the end-to-end implementation and delivery of vehicle power electronics at the PCBA and unit level by the Power Electronics team, including power generation, storage, conversion, and distribution while meeting technical and schedule goals
  • Support the Avionics and multi-disciplinary team in developing tech roadmaps, system architectures, requirements, and integration testing of components in vehicles
  • Lead the Power Electronic team through the Avionics development process including requirements, schematics, analysis, reviews, PCB layout, manufacturing, test, and delivery
  • Build and foster the Power EE team’s growth through recruiting, mentorship, support technical work, evaluate performance, and promote career growth
  • Support the specification, selection, procurement, test, and delivery of 3rd party supplied units
  • Perform board level design, analysis, and test as needed to support team work
  • Support the electro-mechanical strategy for power units and interconnect
  • Support qualification and integration testing of power units
  • Support vehicle commissioning and mission operations related to the Electrical Power Subsystem

What you'll bring:

Basic Qualifications 
  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) related field
  • 5+ years experience in end-to-end spacecraft power electronics design at the PCBA level
  • 5+ years experience in leading teams through end-to-end power electronics development and delivery
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Expertise in power circuits including distribution techniques, voltage regulators, and analog instrumentation
  • Familiarity with solar array and battery design and manufacturing. 
  • Skilled at schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Skilled at performing circuit analyses in SPICE and Excel
Additional Responsibilities 
  • Design for space environments including radiation impacts and mitigations
  • PCBA design in Altium Designer
  • Use basic electronic lab equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, DMMs, signal generators, soldering iron, etc.
