This is why ASML Research continuously explores novel methods to generate, manipulate, illuminate, and measure light at wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Role and responsibilities

Continuing shrink of semiconductor structures requires continuous improvements of metrology and imaging tools. A key enabler for these are novel, high-brightness light sources across the electromagnetic spectrum, particularly including wavelengths where no efficient lasers exist, such as extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and ultrabroadband (white light) sources. Advancement of these light sources can directly lead to new tools for ASML that can be integrated into ASML's metrology portfolio. In this internship, you will focus on one such promising technology in which ultrashort laser pulses are focused into a hollow core fiber filled with gas, leading to light conversion to a variety of wavelengths due to nonlinear processes in the gas. These processes include white light generation by extreme spectral broadening caused by the Kerr effect, as well as generation of XUV light due to high harmonic generation. In the internship, you will use and further develop existing numerical modeling tools to simulate the propagation of laser pulses through a fiber, coupled to the high harmonic generation process, to predict and optimize the properties of the generated XUV light.

Education and experience

  • Student working towards a MS/PhD degree, in Physics.

  • Have an affinity with physical modelling, optics and Fourier analysis;

  • Are a critical thinker, driven and have good communication skills;

  • Have knowledge of scientific programming languages like Mathematica, Matlab or Python;

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work.
