Role description: 

We are seeking an Intermediate Transportation Design Engineer to join our dynamic Ottawa Office. The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise in roadway and transit corridor design, excellent communication, and proven experience delivering preliminary and detailed engineering projects. This position is primarily focused on the design, development, and delivery of transportation infrastructure, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams to create innovative, sustainable mobility solutions.

Role accountabilities:

• Lead and deliver functional, preliminary and detailed design for transportation infrastructure projects, including municipal roads, highways, LRT/BRT corridors, and active transportation facilities.
• Develop engineering drawings and models using MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
• Prepare and review design documents, construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for roadways, intersections, and transit facilities.
• Conduct road safety and traffic operations analysis to inform design decisions (not planning studies).
• Coordinate and integrate utility, drainage, and grading designs in collaboration with other engineering disciplines.
• Ensure all designs are compliant with applicable standards and guidelines (e.g., TAC, Ontario Traffic Manuals, MTO, City of Ottawa requirements).
• Support the preparation of tender packages and respond to contractor inquiries during construction.
• Perform quality checks for technical accuracy and completeness prior to submittal.
• Prepare technical reports to address design issues, prepare presentations and lead small projects/tasks independently.
• Mentor junior staff in design tasks and technical best practices.
• Maintain effective communication with clients, attend design meetings, and deliver technical presentations if required.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with PEO.
• 4-6 years of direct experience in transportation design: municipal roads, highways, LRT/BRT, intersection improvements, and active transportation infrastructure. Roundabout design experience will be considered an asset.
• Proficient in MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D.
• Working knowledge of specialized software (e.g., Synchro, AutoTurn) to support design tasks.
• Strong understanding of relevant technical standards, including TAC Geometric Design Guide, Ontario Traffic Manuals, City of Ottawa design standards and policies and the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple design tasks, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
