As part of Analog Devices Battery Management applications team, you will play a key role in defining products that go into smartphones, gaming consoles, and other leading-edge consumer electronics. Working within a talented team of engineers, you will be developing hardware/firmware requirements and algorithms, as well as guiding firmware team for new integrated circuits (ICs) for Lithium-ion battery fuel gauging, charging, health and safety. This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about developing embedded solutions and hardware/software integration. You’ll be involved in the complete product life cycle from system concept through to customer device mass production.

Engineers qualifying for this position will be responsible for defining the hardware, algorithms and firmware for ADI’s next generation, industry leading battery management ICs while supporting design efforts for major mobile devices.

Successful candidates should have detailed knowledge of battery-related fuel gauge IC implementation, algorithms, battery state-of-health, battery protection, authentication, chargers and mixed-signal design (including analog to digital converters). Further expertise in system design and integration as well as battery testing is helpful.

Candidates must be able to work closely in cross functional team including application engineering, design engineering, firmware and software engineering, business management, and field application engineering to support all facets of their new product development. Duties will include discussing technical requirements with key customers and ADI sales and field application engineers, generating initial operation specifications, product introduction responsibilities, schematics reviews, PCB layout reviews and support of technical problems that occur during the customers' product development stages. Experience in assembly programming, software development and scripting with Python is a must.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Define low quiescent current ICs and algorithms for fuel gauging and charging lithium-ion batteries

• Collaborate closely with firmware team to implement and optimize power and memory efficient firmware in C for RISC-V for low power mobile battery managing ICs designed into cutting-edge consumer products

• Monitor emerging battery chemistries, safety and regulatory requirements and define new fuel gauge and chargers to address any changes needed to meet evolving market needs

• Define algorithms to improve accuracy of battery state and health monitoring

• Define algorithms to improve fast and safe charging of batteries

• Work closely with the applications team to support existing products

• Be a strong contributor in Analog Devices applications engineering team, provide critical and constructive feedback on new products and work across multiple teams to ensure production-ready deliverables

• Develop automated testing systems in Python for testing and debugging of emulation platform and silicon

• Create and maintain design documents on new core technologies that you will develop

• Travel globally to engage with key partner customers

• Collaborate closely with firmware/software team and interface with customers and the business team to understand market trends and customer needs to create product roadmaps

• Engage with advanced R&D teams to align internal core process/fab technology developments with fuel gauge, protector, authentication, charger product roadmaps.

• Write technical documentation to support customer designs, product evaluation boards, as well as full system operation.

• Characterize and validate new products with our application team to ensure high reliability operation

*Minimum Qualifications

• 5-10 years of battery management algorithms/hardware & firmware development or product definition experience

• Expertise in battery management algorithms/hardware & firmware for fuel gauges, protectors and chargers

• Expertise in software and hardware for embedded systems such RISC-V or similar architecture

• Proficiency in C for an embedded processor core (RISC-V, ARM)

• Hands-on experience to debug the code using JTAG and working with processor cores synthesized on FPGA 

• Understanding of the different type of memory available in embedded system (SRAM, NVM, ROM) and ability to define memory map and code architecture that best utilize them.

• Proficiency in code optimization, especially for embedded/memory constrained environment

• Understanding of SoC components (ROM, DMA, Interrupts, OTP Memory) and attached peripherals (ADC, DAC, I2C, SPI) and ability to write the code that interacts with them

• Experience in implementing state machine in C code or assembly

• Working knowledge of Python or similar high level programming language

• Ability to work with different tool chains and IDEs (MS Vscode, GCC, Eclipse, and so on)

• Experience with test automation or continuous integration systems such as Jenkins

• BS in computer science or electrical engineering with 6+ years of experience or MS with 4+ years of experience or 5-10 years relevant experience and a MS in Electrical Engineering or related field

• Familiar with Python for data processing

• Expertise in battery standards

• Experience working with battery chargers and fuel gauges

• Experience working with assembly code

The wage range for a new hire into this position is $149,500 to $205,563.
