About API Gateways Portfolio:
American Express API Gateways portfolio consists of several Gateway components including APIGEE, Gloo Gateway and GraphQL platforms. This organization seeks to set the bar for these products at American Express. We are responsible for innovating, integrating, and supporting APIs at scale.
Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Engineering Manager with a strong foundation in API strategy, system architecture, and cloud-native technologies, along with proven leadership abilities to drive engineering excellence. In this role, you will be responsible for leading high-performing production management & engineering teams, and ensuring successful delivery of scalable and secure solutions.
Job Responsibilities:
- Define and drive production management strategies to ensure high availability, improved resiliency, and enhanced observability to support growing A2A, B2B and B2C API workloads.
- Lead incident response process, ensuring reduction in Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR) with an objective of minimizing business impacts.
- Develop root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to continuously improve system reliability.
- Contribute to API strategy goals to provide best-in class seamless integration for our customers and partners.
- Drive automation-first principle for change deployments, scaling, and incident response.
- Improve end-to-end observability to gain insights into system performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Design and implement disaster recovery plans and business continuity strategies.
- Provide strong leadership to a geographically dispersed team and prioritize the projects as situation demands.
- Lead and mentor a strong team of software engineers fostering a culture of reliability and operational excellence.
- Guide team members on career development opportunities, conduct performance evaluations, and provide continuous feedback.
- Nurture a highly collaborative, inclusive, strong cohesive and productive team passionate about accomplishing targets in timely manner in line with overall organization strategy and goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in or Engineering, Science or Technology.
- 8+ years experience working as an SRE, production management, or similar role with a minimum of 2 years experience in leadership roles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience on Service Mesh, Docker, Kubernetes and OpenShift technologies.
- Experience with monitoring and alerting tools such as Prometheus, Dynatrace, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Fluentd and Kibana (EFK), Splunk etc.
- Proficiency on pipeline-based deployments via CICD framework.
- Proficiency on at least one programming languages/tools including Python, Golang, Ansible etc.
- Knowledge on networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, and load balancing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve sophisticated issues.
- Knowledge on incident management frameworks (ITIL, SRE principles).
- Strong communication skills, and ability to collaborate with multi-functional teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of improving resiliency and availability of the systems.
- Proven track record to lead, mentor and scale team members in a fast-paced production environment.
- Proven success in building a high-performance, reliability-focused engineering culture.
- Passion for staying up to date with the latest industry trends.
