SMTS SOFTWARE SYSTEMS DESIGN ENGINEER

The ROLE:

As Debug Lead in the Embedded Engineering Group, you will lead the strategy, execution, and delivery of silicon debug activities for next-generation embedded SoCs. You will be responsible for driving the identification, triage, root-cause analysis, and resolution of complex silicon, platform, and system-level issues across product development phases. Working closely with architecture, design, validation, firmware, BIOS, software, and product engineering teams, you will ensure rapid issue closure while enabling high-quality, on-time product launches. This is a highly visible technical leadership role requiring deep debug expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and strong execution skills.

The PERSON:

A successful candidate is a hands-on technical leader with a passion for solving complex problems and driving teams through ambiguous and challenging debug scenarios. The individual must possess strong silicon and platform debug expertise, exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams toward timely issue resolution. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, can balance multiple high-priority issues simultaneously, communicates effectively with engineering and executive stakeholders, and demonstrates a relentless focus on product quality, customer success, and operational excellence

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Silicon Debug & Root Cause Analysis

  • Lead post-silicon debug activities across CPU, chipset, platform, firmware, and system-level components.
  • Drive end-to-end issue triage, root-cause analysis, and resolution of silicon, BIOS, firmware, and platform defects.
  • Develop and execute debug strategies for first-silicon bring-up, feature enablement, and validation readiness.
  • Partner with design, architecture, validation, product engineering, and software teams to drive timely issue closure.

Debug Infrastructure & Methodology

  • Define and establish scalable debug methodologies, workflows, and best practices across programs.
  • Develop and maintain debug dashboards, issue-tracking mechanisms, and key performance metrics.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance debug efficiency, issue turnaround time, and overall product quality.
  • Champion automation opportunities that improve debug productivity and reduce manual analysis effort.

Cross-Functional Program Execution

  • Coordinate debug activities across global teams to support critical program milestones and product launch schedules.
  • Prioritize and drive closure of high-impact issues affecting functionality, performance, power, reliability, and customer readiness.
  • Ensure effective communication of technical risks, issue status, and mitigation plans to engineering and management stakeholders.
  • Support customer escalations and field issues by providing technical leadership and rapid root-cause identification.

Technical Leadership & Mentoring

  • Serve as the technical focal point for complex silicon and platform debug challenges.
  • Mentor engineers on advanced debug techniques, failure analysis methodologies, and system-level problem-solving.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, operational rigor, and data-driven decision making.
  • Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and capability development of the debug organization.

Risk Management & Quality

  • Identify debug-related execution risks early and develop mitigation plans.
  • Drive preventive actions and systemic fixes to reduce recurring issues across product generations.
  • Ensure robust debug coverage and comprehensive issue tracking throughout the product lifecycle.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 15+ years of semiconductor industry experience with significant hands-on expertise in silicon, platform, firmware, or system debug.
  • Strong understanding of x86 SoC architecture, embedded systems, platform design, and hardware/software interactions.
  • Proven experience in post-silicon bring-up, failure analysis, issue triage, and root-cause debugging of complex semiconductor products.
  • Demonstrated success leading technical teams and driving issue resolution across multiple cross-functional organizations.
  • Expertise with industry-standard debug tools including JTAG, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, oscilloscopes, and firmware tracing tools.
  • Experience debugging high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, USB, Ethernet, SATA, DDR, and related subsystems.
  • Strong knowledge of BIOS, firmware, operating systems, drivers, and platform enablement flows.
  • Ability to effectively present technical findings and executive summaries to senior leadership.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical issues and effectively communicate with senior management.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field
