SENIOR MANAGER: SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT - AI PERFORMANCE THE ROLE: AMD is looking for a Senior Manager to lead a high-performing team of performance engineers focused on optimizing frontier AI workloads on AMD GPUs. You will shape the technical vision, set direction for performance optimization strategies, and ensure alignment with customer needs and business goals. THE PERSON: The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership skills. You understand the full AI system — from model architecture and inference paradigms to GPU performance and rack-level design — and can translate that understanding into team direction, customer engagement, and upstream influence. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead and grow a team of performance engineers, ensuring professional development, productivity, and engagement Drive the development and delivery of performance optimization solutions aligned with customer and business goals Engage directly with customers to understand their performance needs and translate them into actionable engineering plans Set technical direction by identifying performance bottlenecks and defining strategies to overcome them, informed by end-to-end understanding of AI workloads and system design Contribute to and lead efforts in major open-source AI frameworks (e.g., vLLM, SGLang) to improve customer experience and influence the ecosystem Communicate effectively with upper management on team progress, technical challenges, and customer requirements Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define priorities and ensure timely execution Establish and uphold best practices in software development, profiling, benchmarking, and project management Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Deep understanding of GPU architectures, memory hierarchy, instruction scheduling, and performance tradeoffs Understanding of end-to-end AI systems: model architectures, inference paradigms (e.g., prefill-decode disaggregation, speculative decoding), and system/rack-level design considerations Strong background in performance engineering, including profiling, benchmarking, and low-level optimization Experience with AI/ML workloads and understanding of model behavior and compute/memory requirements Proven ability to lead and scale engineering teams in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment Strong proficiency in PyTorch Familiarity with major open-source AI frameworks such as vLLM and SGLang Hands-on experience with C++ and GPU programming using HIP, CUDA, or OpenCL Strong Linux systems knowledge and experience working in Linux-based development environments Solid understanding of modern software engineering practices (CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, DevOps) Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills Strong written and spoken English; working language is English Experience working with agile methodologies and cross-functional teams ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS: Bachelor's, Master's, PhD or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
