Description
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience with analysis simulation software, including writing custom scripts to enable rapid design trades and iterations for thermal systems for various operational cases.
- 2+ years experience with computational fluid dynamics packages (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, ANSYS Icepak, OpenFoam)
- 2+ years experience with finite element analysis packages (e.g., ANSYS Mechanical)
- 2+ years experience with test planning, test set-up, results correlation and system verification for production.
- 2+ years experience in development and/or selection of thermal control hardware (e.g., materials and finishes, thermal interface materials, heat-pipes, radiators, temperature sensors, and heaters).
- Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in mechanical engineering or related field.
- CAD skills (NX or Solidworks)
- Experience with thermal design implementations for high volume production.
- Design for batch testing for subsystem workmanship tests
- Experience with Thermal Desktop

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $105,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

We are looking for an outstanding Thermal Design Engineer who combines strong technical, research and analytical capabilities with a demonstrated ability to get the right work done quickly and effectively. The successful candidate must have experience working on thermal control of consumer electronics products, producing top notch thermal analysis and providing essential thermal related input and recommendations to system architects and subsystem leads.


Key job responsibilities
- Support extensive architectural trades with preliminary thermal analysis on printed circuit boards.
- Perform detailed and comprehensive analyses of integrated circuit components, using finite element analysis.
- Conduct computational fluid analyses for multiple design conditions.
- Drive design optimization for performance, mass and cost, while meeting system reliability requirements through application of a range of thermal control hardware options.
- Design, analyze and select heat pipes as needed for overall system solution.
- Develop automated scripts enabling rapid analysis updates accommodating trades (e.g., power states, duty cycle, structural mapping).
- Define, lead and execute thermal cycling for development and qualification tests.
- Correlate thermal models based on test results.
- Define and select test equipment as needed (e.g., thermal chambers, sensors, data logging equipment, infrared cameras, thermocouples, power supplies)
- Conduct testing of prototypes and engineering models for fast design feedback loops.
- Document trades and design evolution, and present results during design reviews.
