EC2 Gateway Networking builds and operates some of the most advanced networks on the planet; we are the backbone for companies of all sizes, delivered by our global software defined network.
One of the toughest challenges at our mega-scale is managing an ever growing number of physical devices in a robust and automated fashion. Our customers demand and expect a network that is always available and redundant. As AWS continues its exponential growth, EC2 Gateway Networking needs your help to manage the growing physical footprint. This involves automating fleet lifecycle management, making intelligent decisions based on a rich set of metrics emitted by the fleet and providing insight into conditions on the ground at scale.
In EC2 Gateway Networking, you will observe the inner workings of Amazon's EC2 Network. You’ll see how a customer obsessed IP network is managed. You’ll become an expert in our platform, and drive the advancement of our technologies to deliver delight to our customers.
If you are a System Engineer with a strong background in open source development and a passion for analyzing and automating fleets at scale, then this is your opportunity to own major deliverables and all aspects of the development cycle: scoping, design, implementation, and testing. You will be encouraged to exercise your judgment in proactively determining and recommending the best features, designs, and support models based on business objectives, timelines, and resource constraints.
Key job responsibilities
A System Engineer on the team is expected to operate autonomously, deliver projects that have scope at the team level and are starting to interact with other teams. They seek guidance from their manager, Sr. Engineers, or Principal Engineers when facing trade-off decisions. They mentor new team members on how the team’s services are constructed and operate. They help guide and influence the team by providing feedback during operations reviews and they influence their manager by contributing during backlog reviews and planning meetings. They solve difficult technical problems that require understanding the team’s software and weigh trade-offs to deliver solutions that are logical, testable and maintainable.
A day in the life
A typical day for this role will include performing root cause analysis on internal network appliances and coming up with proposals on how to prevent recurrence, maintaining network health, reviewing code of other members on the team, contributing code to existing tooling, providing project updates to leadership and other team members and developing estimates for upcoming deliverables.
This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.
