Senior Software Engineer - Embedded Software

Location: Taiwan Office (TW)

Description

At Altair Semiconductor, we develop advanced wireless and IoT solutions that connect millions of devices worldwide.

Our engineers own significant parts of each project, becoming true experts in their fields. You'll work directly with your team from initial concept through final delivery, seeing the real impact of your work.

We maintain a flat organization where ideas flow freely between engineers and leadership. Our experienced team members actively mentor newer colleagues, creating an environment where everyone can learn and grow.

We're proud that our employees choose to build long-term careers with us. Many of our team members have been with the company for years, contributing to a stable, knowledgeable workplace where collaboration comes naturally.

Altair Semiconductor, is a global leader in cellular IoT chipsets. Our low-power LTE-M/NB-IoT and 5G-ready solutions — including the ALT1250 and the award-winning ALT1350 SoC — used in millions of devices worldwide, from smart meters and trackers to wearables and connected vehicles. Combining cellular, satellite (NTN), and sub-GHz connectivity with industry-leading power efficiency, our chipsets are enabling the intelligent, connected physical world. Join us to shape the silicon that powers the next generation of IoT.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our embedded software team, developing and integrating software for low-power cellular IoT chipsets. You will own features end to end — from design and implementation on RTOS and Linux-based targets, through integration, debug, and validation on real hardware.

This is a hands-on engineering role in a globally distributed organization. You will work with architects, firmware engineers, validation teams, and customer-support engineers across multiple sites and time zones, and you will be a technical point of contact for the software you deliver.

What you will be doing

On a typical day

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain embedded software on RTOS and/or embedded Linux platforms.
  • Integrate software components into full system builds and drive bring-up on new hardware and new chipset revisions.
  • Debug complex, cross-layer issues spanning application, middleware, networking stack, drivers, and hardware — using JTAG/SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, tracing, and log analysis.
  • Build and maintain test setups: automated test benches, regression environments, and reproducible debug configurations.
  • Work on the networking data path and IP stack integration (LwIP or equivalent) with socket programming.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams and customers worldwide; travel to customer for issue resolution when required.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience in embedded systems, programming on an RTOS (e.g. FreeRTOS, ThreadX, Zephyr, or a proprietary RTOS) and/or embedded Linux.
  • Strong, demonstrated hands-on ownership of the full development cycle — implementation, integration, debug, and test setup. You are comfortable being the person who takes an unclear failure on a board and drives it to root cause.
  • Working knowledge of networking stacks, ideally LwIP — TCP/IP fundamentals, sockets, and the practical behavior of an embedded IP stack under real network conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, with proven experience working effectively with engineers across different countries and time zones.
  • Willingness to travel abroad as the work requires.
  • Proficiency in C; strong debugging discipline and comfort with low-level tooling.

Advantageous qualifications

  • Experience with cellular IoT chipsets (Cat-M / NB-IoT / or 5G), AT command interfaces, or PPP/PDN data path work.
  • Experience with low-power / power-optimized embedded design.
  • Experience with test automation frameworks and CI for embedded targets.
  • Practical experience using AI coding assistants in the development workflow (e.g. Claude / Claude Code, or similar) — for code generation and refactoring, code review, debugging and log analysis, test generation, or documentation.
  • BSc/MSc in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
