Associate Director, Embedded Software Platform

We foster an inclusive culture and are looking for diverse, talented people to join Alcon. As an Associate Director, Embedded Software Platform supporting the U.S. Development of Embedded Software Team, a typical day will include:

• Strategic Leadership:

  • Define the platform roadmap and execute the strategic vision for the software platform.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to align platform goals with business objectives.

• Architecture and Design Leadership:

  • Gather input from key product Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to shape platform features and functions.

  • Architect the platform considering patient safety, scalability, security, and performance.

  • Architect the platform to efficiently facilitate variability between products in a product line/family and hence accelerating development.

  • Lead design, development, and maintenance of reusable software components, libraries, and frameworks that can be leveraged across multiple products.

  • Ensure these components adhere to coding standards, are well-documented, and undergo rigorous testing.

  • Leverage industry best practices and internal expertise.

• Collaboration:

  • Collaborate closely with product development teams to incorporate platform components into their projects and ensuring seamless adoption.

  • Collaborate closely with hardware teams to guide creation of a reusable hardware platform for software.

  • Collaborate with other teams as needed to meet product requirements: UI/UX, Interoperability, Product Security.

• Team Management:

  • Lead platform-related efforts by partnering with vendors.

  • Mentor and guide software engineers and vendors within the platform team.

  • Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and knowledge sharing.

• Quality Assurance:

  • Work closely with Verification and QA teams to ensure the reliability and stability of platform components.

  • Address any defects or performance bottlenecks promptly.

  • Create comprehensive documentation for platform components, APIs, and usage guidelines.

• Automation and Tooling:

  • Developing automation scripts for building, testing and deployment.

  • Implementing CI/CD pipelines and integrating tools for continuous integration and delivery

• Platform Maintenance:

  • Oversee day-to-day platform management and maintenance.

  • Extend the platform’s capabilities to meet evolving business needs.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO ALCON:

• Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school+15 yrs;Assoc.+11 yrs; M.S.+4 yrs; PhD+3 yrs)

• The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English

• 7 Years of Relevant Experience

• Work hours:40 hours

• Travel:10%

Preferred Experience:

• Degree major in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

• Prior experience in architecting platforms for software product lines is highly desired.

• Strong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design and design patterns is required.

• Proven experience in safety critical embedded software development, preferably for medical devices.

• Proficiency with C/C++ applications deployed on real-time operating systems (RTOS).

• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

• Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and issue tracking tools.

• Experience with Medical Device software life-cycle processes (EN 62304, FDA guidance)

• Experience with DevOps solutions for hosting, managing, and distributing source, binaries and related artifacts.
