AEye’s Director of MEMS Technology works primarily in AEye’s facilities designing, testing, and integrating MOEMS devices into product lines of MEMS-based random access LiDAR scanners. The director leads a team to conduct hands-on experiments and characterization of MEMS devices, associated components, and subsystems. The director works with the systems, quality, and electrical engineering teams on the design and development of the scanning system. The position requires a strong background in photonics and depth of knowledge in electronics and mechanical engineering.

Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead and conduct hands-on research and development efforts of MEMS/MOEMS devices and packaging at AEye
  • Develop test and characterization systems used to characterize MEMS performance and to establish end of line test methods to determine known good die
  • Evaluate MEMS technologies and foundries for next generation products
  • Manage MEMS foundries regarding design, fabrication, and testing
  • Lead and conduct MEMS automotive and industrial qualification efforts at AEye
  • Communicate with our CM (contract manufacturer) on the integration of MEMS into scanner systems
  • Work with the MEMS Control Systems Engineering Team on development of the control electronics and algorithms for agile mirror control
  • Work with the Quality Team on root-cause failure analysis to improve device reliability
  • Provide detailed status and progress reports to management
  • Assist and collaborate with other teams at AEYE involved in the execution of the above tasks
  • Hybrid - required to be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week
  • Some travel is required

Essential Skills & Experience Requirements (required):

  • MS or PhD Degree in a discipline relevant to MOEMS (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics etc.) and photonics
  • Minimum 5 years clean-room and MEMS or related fabrication experience
  • Minimum 15 years of MEMS industry or relevant experience
  • Direct experience in the design, fabrication, and control of MEMS mirrors
  • Direct experience and deep knowledge of many of the various MEMS actuation (capacitive, piezoelectric, electromagnetic etc.) and sensing modalities (capacitive, piezoelectric, piezoresistive, laser/PSD etc.)
  • Direct experience with MEMS foundries and design for dedicated foundry process modules
  • Hands-on experience in MEMS cleanroom fabrication and characterization equipment
  • Direct experience with electrical testing and optical characterization of MOEMS in the laboratory
  • Strong background in photonics, i.e. lasers, photodetectors, gaussian optics, free-space beam steering and fiber optics etc.
  • Experience with MEMS design and simulation tools
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, strong organization skills with an attention to detail, excellent documentation capabilities
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated
  • May be required to lift up to 50lbs

Preferred Skills & Experience (useful):

  • Experience or strong background in open-loop and closed-loop feedback control of MEMS devices
  • Experience or strong background in MOEMS reliability testing and packaging
  • Experience or strong background with MOEMS product commercialization through commercial foundries
  • Experience in a fast-paced and demanding start-up environment
