Engineering Manager  - Build Tooling

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager for our Build Tooling Team within the Internal Developer Platform organization. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in build systems, with a solid understanding of continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. You will make data-driven decisions to balance technical debt, feature development, and operational efficiency, effectively managing long-running technical projects that require you to focus on build performance, reliability, and scalability.

As a people leader, you will foster a culture of innovation, trust, and proactive problem-solving. You will mentor and develop your team, focusing on their technical and professional growth while promoting automation to reduce build times and improve developer experience of our large engineering group. Good communication and stakeholder management skills are essential, as you will articulate technical decisions and timelines clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring alignment and transparency across the organization.

In this role, you will work closely with other infrastructure teams (Development Infrastructure, Testing, Deployment) and product teams within the company to scale and optimize the core Build Tooling that supports developers and hundreds of thousands of builds annually on Adyen’s monorepo.

What you'll do

• Lead a team of 4 to 8 engineers that own, maintain and operate the company's core build tooling platform, primarily focusing on Gradle
• Work with your team to design and implement strategies that will allow us to meet the demands of a rapidly growing monorepo ecosystem
• Have a multiplier effect by motivating team members and provide coaching in areas including but not limited to: engineering best practices, scalable build architecture design, build optimization techniques
• Maintain an inclusive team culture focused on autonomy, ownership, collaboration, communication, and impact
• Collaborate with different teams to design and implement new build tools and plugins with performance/scalability in mind
• Set clear individual and team goals that align with our strategic engineering ambitions in close collaboration with the developer productivity leadership
• Create an inspiring and collaborative team environment with an open communication/feedback culture
• Recruit new team members in line with the company culture and required skills

Who you are

• An energetic self-starter experienced in creating alignment between multiple teams
• Build systems with high performance, scalability, and reliability challenges excite you
• Technical competency in software engineering using Gradle or other build tools with JVM languages preferably in a large-scale development environment
• You are able to define, implement and monitor performance KPIs to quickly identify opportunities for improvement in existing build systems
• Experienced in coaching and mentoring engineering talent
• Experienced in leading technical projects in a fast-paced environment
• Experienced with collaborating with senior leadership to set strategic direction including build tooling roadmaps
• An excellent communicator and team player with strong management skills and technical aptitude

Minimum qualifications

• 2+ years experience in managing engineering teams within a build tooling or developer productivity environment
•  6+ years of experience in Software Engineering industry in a fast-paced tech environment
• Deep understanding of build optimization techniques
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and integrating build systems into the development lifecycle
• Full professional proficiency in English and excellent communication skills
