Job Description

There are times when New Zealand feels a long way away from anywhere - and that’s not always a bad thing! But if you are a Developer right now you know your skills are in high demand and you want to be working at the edge where you are pushing the boundaries. And that’s not in NZ, right?

Wrong… Vector is collaborating with AWS and other leading global technology firms right here in New Zealand to work on some of the biggest energy challenges of our time. As a developer at the top of your game, you’ll get to work on projects that are leading the way in the global challenge towards a low carbon economy.

So at VTS, you can be closer to Silicon Valley than you thought.

About the role

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to move towards a people leadership role and who has a keen interest in building a great engineering culture. You will spend approximately 70% of your time writing code and working within a delivery squad, and the other 30% mentoring senior, intermediate and junior engineers.

You'll learn from, and be inspired by, our team of software developers in our energy revolution and at the same time you will:

  • Use your advanced software development skills to build software - primarily in Java, but also at times with frontend frameworks like React, and infrastructure automation with Terraform
  • Mentor and develop high-performing engineers 1:1s, coaching, and providing professional development opportunities
  • Act as a communication channel between developers, squads and teams
  • Grow in your role and in your career, collaborating with leading global partners such as AWS to build valuable software systems for a global customer base
  • Work in a stable, product-focussed agile team and have a voice in what we build, and how we build it
  • Learn (and teach) how to use TDD, BDD, and automated application deployment for effective software delivery
  • Gain experience with AWS services like Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, and more
  • Help to improve the developer experience at VTS.

Who are we looking for?
You will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Software development experience: advanced knowledge in Backend programming with Java and Spring, OR frontend programming using ReactJS
  • An interest in caring for people and improving the working experience for software developers
  • A hunger to solve problems and learn!

Who we are

In 2020, an alliance was formed between Vector and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to co-develop a cloud native data platform: Diverge. This team has evolved to become Vector Technology Services (VTS); a subsidiary of Vector, New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas.

Through our strategy of delivering commercially valuable cloud native platforms that solve real problems right now, while primed for rapid evolution in the future, we work to deliver on our vision of creating a new energy future with the following considerations:

  • Decarbonisation
  • Decentralisation
  • Democratisation
  • Digitalisation

The Diverge data platform:

  • Is a customisable managed software-as-a-service platform; for energy data ingestion, processing, insights generation and data delivery.
  • Is cloud native, composed entirely of AWS serverless services which bring cloud native scalability, reliability and resilience to this mission critical enterprise system.
  • Is deployed and managed through infrastructure-as-code, automated software release and service orchestration.
  • Performs streaming data processing in state, temporal sequence and data dependency aware pipelines.

Why VTS?

Whether it’s the opportunity to work on challenges on a truly global scale in collaboration with the leading technology firms, or to build a legacy for Auckland and New Zealand through your work; or perhaps to work in an innovative and transformative sector, or our commitment to supporting your development, there’s a myriad of reasons to choose a career with VTS.
