The Team and Role
The Servicing Payments and Experience squad is responsible for ensuring a smooth and seamless experience for our borrowers, while managing the borrower payments platform. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll work across our entire technical stack to build new features that allow our customers to more seamlessly action their accounts, make or schedule payments, and ultimately reduce delinquencies. As a leader on this team, you’ll own your projects end to end, working with business stakeholders and directing other engineers through scoping, planning, design, and implementation.
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per quarter at an Upstart office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

- Meet with product and operations stakeholders to understand and work through new project requirements
- Translate complex business requirements into technical plans
- Lead technical discussions and influence others on design choices
- Mentor others on code quality and architecture best practices
- Exemplify a team first mindset and bias for action
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- 7+ years of experience working with full stack web applications professionally
- Experience leading a team of engineers through the end to end SDLC
- Experience working with stakeholders to understand business needs, and translating those requirements into engineering terms
- Preferred qualifications:
- Team first mindset and the willingness to jump into any area needed
- Dedication to mentoring, and implementing best practices for the team
- Professional experience with Ruby on Rails and React
- Strong computer science fundamentals

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within this range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. The salary listed below for sales roles is On Target Earnings which includes both salary and commission, assuming 100% target achievement.
