Company Description

Today, we are not utilizing resources in a sustainable way. In fact, the world is only 7.2% circular, meaning much of the Earth’s precious resources are only used once, leaving huge untapped potential for more sustainable resource management. TOMRA provides cutting-edge sorting solutions for optimal resource productivity within the recycling, mining and food industries and is therefore uniquely positioned to shape the Circular Economy, creating demand for this way of thinking in the world. At TOMRA we want to be a thought leader, encouraging a more sustainable way of thinking and inspiring active change around the world.

TOMRA Recycling is a global leader in the field of automated sensor-based waste sorting, also being a pioneer in its field - currently TOMRA Recycling has an installed base of close to 6,460 units across more than 40 markets.

With our deep application knowledge, powerful machine learning software and a variety of in-house developed sensors we offer our customers state-of-the-art, high-performance sorting solutions for maximum purity and yield.

Job Description

As an Optical Engineer, you will be responsible for the development of sensor components for TOMRA sorting machines. This includes spectroscopic sensors, pulse laser assemblies, and laser triangulation systems - your ideas can directly make a contribution to the performance of our future systems.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary group of 9 motivated and skilled developers, who cover a diversity of backgrounds and topics like optics, analog electronics, embedded systems, software engineering, mechanical engineering, 3D printing, and image processing.

Our team has a friendly, humorous and inspiring way of interacting, collaborates closely and is passionate about technology and innovation.

Your tasks

  • Test, evaluate, analyze, and industrialize (spectroscopic) image acquisition systems, high-power laser optics, and their components.
  • Evaluate optical parts from second sources/end-of-life (EOL).
  • Continuous improvement of optical sensor systems.
  • Define, plan, and implement test tools and setups.
  • Specification of optical components.
  • Provide technical support to production, strategic purchasing, and quality assurance departments.

Qualifications

  • Master's or diploma degree in applied physics, optical engineering, or similar field.
  • Broad technical interest: eager to expand knowledge in optics, electronics, optical materials classification, and software engineering.
  • Analytical and systematic approach with a drive for innovative solutions.
  • Ideally, experience with optical detectors, optical spectrometers, and analog electronics.
  • Knowledge of optical design tools (e.g., Zemax) or circuit simulation software (e.g., LTSPICE) is a plus.
  • Background in (laser) physics, preferably with knowledge and experience in pulse lasers.
  • Programming skills, particularly in Python, are advantageous.
  • Fluent in English, at least basic proficiency in German.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.

Additional Information

Your benefits

  • 30 days annual leave;
  • Supported company pension scheme;

  • Professional and personal development: learning on the job, specialized course, conferences etc.;
  • Coaching opportunities - Individual Development Programs;
  • Norwegian corporate culture (no hierarchical thinking, transparent communication culture).

(!) We value your time, instead of lengthy motivation letter, simply answer one question in the "Message to Hiring Manager" section when submitting your resume:

  • What is the name of the main sorting machine at TOMRA Recycling?

If there´s anything else you want to let us know or highlight, please feel free to add a further remark.
