(Senior) Robotics/Software Engineer, Scientific Instrumentation

Responsibilities

• Design and realize bench-scale robotics for automated materials research instrumentation
• As a member of the automation team, contribute robotic and software engineering solutions to the design of automated instruments
• Collaborate and contribute to systems engineering efforts within the automation team
• Work with the machine learning team to implement custom computational methods in robotic systems, including integration of methods in the control software for robotics
• Work with the materials synthesis and characterization team to establish guidelines for robotic systems, including sample handling methods, methods for ensuring human and equipment safety, and metrics such speed-precision tradeoffs for the design of robotic systems
• Work with the data science team to establish machine representations of robotic methods and provenance-tracking methods for robots, materials, and detectors with which they interface
• Assess and report safety and quality control aspects of the lab’s automated instrumentation
• Work across multiple instruments and experiment workflows to help realize an ecosystem of automated instruments
• Work with the automation team to evolve workflows from manual, to human-in-the-loop automation, to autonomous experimentation

Qualifications

• Hands-on and direct experience with the design of bench-scale robotics
• 3+ years experience and/or certification in robotics engineering
• 3+ years experience with development of software, preferentially in the Python programming language, for the controlling robotic systems
• Experience with incorporation of electronic sensors and detectors in robotic systems
• Masters in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related field
• 3+ years experience in industrial and/or research engineering industry
• Strong self-starter and independent thinker, with strong attention to detail
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information in a clear and thorough manner
• Eager to work with highly skilled and dynamic teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and technical setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with programming in Python
• Experience with manipulation of small (1 mm-scale) parts
• Experience with solid-state materials research
• Experience with the design of robotics within vacuum instrumentation and/or argon glove boxes
• Experience with experiment automation
