About the role:

As Network Software Engineering Senior Specialist, you thrive on working with your team to design, build and deliver innovative software products and solutions that delight our customers. You apply broad knowledge in software application layer solutions and the software development lifecycle, to experiment, solve problems and own solutions that transform epics into new product features and capabilities. Your continuous learning and improvement mindset and collaboration skills are critical to success in this role, as you continue to deepen your knowledge and expertise in the Software Engineering Domain.

Key Accountabilities:

As a Network Software Engineering Senior Specialist, you apply broad knowledge and technical knowledge in the Software Engineering domain to deliver the following responsibilities:

  • Be most valued contributor in feature team, with a strong ownership of business capability(s)
  • Understand business domain thoroughly. Design, develop and deploy business functionality in the microservices architecture.
  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality software applications using Node.js, following best practices and coding standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, define technical specifications, and implement new features and enhancements.
  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code that adheres to industry standards and guidelines.
  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks and optimize application performance to ensure scalability and responsiveness.
  • Conduct thorough testing and debugging of applications to ensure the delivery of high-quality software.
  • Participate in code reviews to provide constructive feedback and ensure code quality.
  • Mentor and guide junior developers, providing technical expertise and sharing best practices.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in Node.js development.
  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to deploy and maintain applications in production environments.
  • Continuously improve development processes and tools to enhance productivity and efficiency.
  • Be an active participant of team as DevOps with full accountability of CI/CD, test automation, support, and monitoring functions within a team.
  • Complying with all relevant processes and standards, including change management principles and processes to ensure deliverables meet or exceed defined quality standards.
  • Perform stakeholder management functions, working with multiple business units.
  • Proactively identifies problems in our product or platform. Improves areas of the code they work on. Leaves things better than they found them.
  • Understand the points of integration between the different systems and highlight the potential risks associated with the delivery of solutions.
  • Support your team to develop innovative software that maintains data/network security management, leveraging set processes to reduce the time between commission and production.
  • Collaborate effectively with your team to translate customer needs into leading-edge software application products, services or systems that meet Telstra’s time, cost, and quality standards.
  • Apply a continuous learning and development mindset to your work, using tried and tested methodologies but also finding opportunities to experiment to incrementally improve or resolve challenges.
  • Take ownership of your own actions and seek guidance from more experienced engineers to support your development and contribute to the delivery of team/mission outcomes.

Desired skills:

  • Proficiency in JavaScript: Strong understanding of JavaScript fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, closures, and asynchronous programming.
  • Node.js and its ecosystem: In-depth knowledge of Node.js, its architecture, and event-driven, non-blocking I/O model is essential. Familiarity with Node.js frameworks, such as Express.js or Koa.js, and package managers like npm or Yarn is important.
  • Server-side development: Expertise in server-side development using Node.js, including building RESTful APIs, implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms, and working with databases (SQL and/or NoSQL).
  • Asynchronous programming: Understanding and experience with asynchronous programming concepts in Node.js, such as callbacks, Promises, and async/await, is necessary for handling concurrent operations efficiently.
  • API design and integration: Ability to design and implement scalable and well-documented APIs, as well as integrate with third-party APIs and services.
  • Testing and debugging: Proficiency in writing unit tests and using testing frameworks (e.g., Mocha, Jest) is important. Strong debugging skills to identify and fix issues in Node.js applications are also essential.
  • Databases: Experience with databases, including SQL (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB, Redis), and knowledge of database querying and optimization techniques.
  • Web security: Understanding of common security vulnerabilities and the ability to implement security measures, such as input validation, data encryption, and secure authentication, to protect Node.js applications.
  • Version control: Experience with version control systems, such as Git, and understanding of collaborative development workflows, like Git branching and pull requests, is crucial for team collaboration and code management.
  • Deployment and DevOps: Knowledge of deploying Node.js applications in production environments, configuring and managing servers, and working with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) for application deployment.
  • Performance optimization: Ability to analyze and optimize the performance of Node.js applications, including optimizing database queries, caching strategies, and code execution.
  • Continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD): Understanding and experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools (e.g., Jenkins, Bamboo) to facilitate the integration, testing, and deployment of Node.js applications.
  • Problem-solving and debugging skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex issues in Node.js applications, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and debug production issues efficiently.
  • Excellent Communication Skills.
