About the role 

We are looking for an experienced and driven Staff Software Engineer, Backend who can have a substantial impact on equality in the workplace by driving scalable software engineering solutions for Syndio's Pay Finder product. The right person can take on and overcome challenges at a fast-paced startup and ensure high quality platform development that meets our users needs. Your work driving scalable software engineering solutions for our product, Pay Finder, and subsequent products will have a meaningful impact on helping companies achieve fairness in the workplace.

  • Lead the design and development of new features from concept to delivery and monitor their results after launch.

  • Provide technical leadership, direction, and mentorship for the growing backend engineering team in their day-to-day activities.
  • Works with other disciplines in your squad (frontend, product, QA, and site reliability) to ensure that all project requirements are appropriately met. 
  • Understands the trade-offs between technical debt and shipping new features, and advocates for engineering needs when appropriate. 
  • Work with other technical leaders to contribute to and guide the engineering organization’s best practices.

  • You have experience in enterprise technology applications architecture, system design, development, and maintenance, with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and security.

  • You are ready to work with teams across the organization to ensure platform scalability, security, and maintainability. 
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills that enable you to interface with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • You bring problem-solving and critical thinking skills to our dynamic startup environment.

Required Skills

  • Expert level experience, with an emphasis on scalable and maintainable cloud-based technology platforms
  • Product-focused solution and architecture design experience
  • Software engineering methodology experience with a focus on testing discipline
  • Experience architecting cloud based applications (we use GCP)
  • Experience with Python/Django and/or Go
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Cloud PubSub, or similar solutions
  • Strong knowledge of API architecture and experience building APIs
  • Extra credit: Experience with role based access design 

Role progression

  • Within 1 month, you’ll understand the strengths and weaknesses of our current platform.
  • Within 3 months, you’ll be working on small designs and projects and formulating opinions / making proposals on more fundamental aspects of the architecture. 
  • Within 6 months, you’ll be implementing new designs / architecture and building new features; you’ll be contributing to greater overall stability of the platform.
  • Within 12 months, you’ll be launching new products and features that our customers are successfully using at scale.

Interview overview

Below you'll find an outline of the interview plan for our Software Engineer position. Please note that this is what we expect the process to look like; we may ask you for supplemental information or require an additional step before making a final decision.

  • 30 minute interview with a member of our Talent Team
  • 45 minute zoom interview with an Engineering Manager
  • A take-home assignment (This replaces live coding in further interviews)
  • Three video interviews with several team members (Backend Engineers, Frontend Engineers, & Product) - 2.5 hours
  • 30 minute final interview with Principal Engineer
