Backend Engineer (Java/Kotlin) - Global Bank

As a key member of the Global Bank tribe, you’ll play a key part in helping us build SumUp's own digital bank. You’ll be part of a global, autonomous, cross-functional team that takes an aspect of our product and perfect it from concept to execution. As a Backend Engineer (Java/Kotlin), you will be responsible for supporting the transition from a localized setup with regional banks to a unified Global Bank. One of the main challenges will be to support the migration from a monolithic structure to microservices architecture.

This role can be remote within Germany and hybrid or on site in Berlin or Cologne. 

What you’ll do

• Design, implement, and iteratively create back-end services.
• Work in a global context collaborating with teams in Europe and Latin America.
• Participate in API design and implementation for both internal APIs and those exposed to our third-party integrators.
• Help your team to deliver business value by taking decisions related to back-end and actively participating in the product discussions.
• Provide comprehensive documentation, good test coverage, and improve code quality.
• Collaborate with other software developers, QA and DevOps engineers to ensure smooth deployment, continuous integration, and support for the software that we deliver.
• Actively participate in code reviews with other software engineers.

You’ll be great for this role if

• You have relevant experience as a Backend Engineer with JVM stack.
• You have relevant experience with functional programming languages.
• You have experience with distributed and fault-tolerant systems.
• You have a passion for clean, maintainable and testable code.
• You have a good understanding of software architecture and application design.

Any of the following would be considered a plus

• You have experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes.
  
• Kotlin Experience
