Description

Today, 60 million Americans work independently, and that trend is only accelerating. But benefits are tightly coupled with full-time, W2-based jobs. As a result, the millions of Americans who work independently are excluded from that financial safety net.

Stride is the world’s first benefits platform built specifically for contractors, part-timers, and the self-employed. We provide them all the same benefits you’d expect from a W2 job, like insurance, tax support, and discounts on products and services. In fact, since launching in 2014, Stride has helped more than 3 million Americans save more than $3 billion.

We’re partnered with the top employers of non-benefited workers, including DoorDash, Uber, Postmates, MasterCard, Amazon, Aon, and Willis Towers Watson. We’re backed with over $86 million in capital by Venrock, New Enterprise Associates, Fidelity’s F-Prime Capital Partners, King River Capital, Mastercard, and Allstate.

And we’re growing!  While we started off exclusively serving non-benefited workers, other companies in our space started knocking on our door to tailor our platform for their customers. Now we need outstanding people (like you!) to help us reach our mission and improve access to affordable benefits for all.

Cash compensation range: $174,000 - $195,000 + equity

About the Role

At Stride, we pride ourselves on a snappy, best-in-class User Experience while shopping and enrolling in benefits. While we started with Consumer, other companies in our space started knocking on our door to build a platform to provide their customers with the same experience. Fast-forward to now, and Platform has made us become a hyper-growth company.

The Stride Engineering Team is looking for a motivated Full-Stack Software Engineer to help take our Consumer products to the next level. We’re a small, cross-functional Product Engineering team that collaborates very closely between Product, QA, Design, and Engineering.

Your work will enormously impact our current web architecture and how we scale it for the future. You’ll work closely with our other frontend, backend, and full-stack Engineers to establish patterns, set best practices, implement front-end features, and bring up infrastructure as code. You’ll work with both product and design teams to set milestones around deliverables and chart a course for the long-term strategy of our suite of web products.

We’re looking for a highly autonomous engineer with a proven track record of leveling up others. Someone who will help set a higher standard and break new ground in operating and evolving our team and development practices.

Responsibilities

  • You will help modernize our codebase and infrastructure, so we have a state-of-the-art architecture that applies best practices. You will be an advocate for solid and clean architecture principles, testing, and Continuous Integration/Delivery.

  • You will be tasked with developing frontend and backend application architectures that allow for moving fast and iterating quickly, backed by rock-solid infrastructure. You will eventually own large chunks of those codebases and infrastructure. You will develop a leading voice on their roadmap.

  • Be a mentor and coach to the other Engineers, helping raise the bar for quality. You will maintain a high level of engineering and security standards.

  • You’ll closely work alongside our Product and Design people to maintain and extend the feature set of the Stride web apps.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Senior-level experience building and contributing to both frontend and backend web applications

  • Proven track record leading quality, high-growth Web Engineering teams from a technical standpoint

  • Wide-ranging programming experience in Javascript.

  • Strong proficiency in at least one Javascript framework like React (preferred), Vue, or similar

  • You have deployed your apps/services to at least one cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • Experience working with RESTful APIs.

  • Experience with relational database systems (PostgreSQL)

  • Experience managing project builds and dependencies using NPM/Yarn/others.

  • Good active listening skills, the ability to empathize with customers, stakeholders and other engineers

  • Lead by example by practicing open and respectful dialogue

  • An eye for detail and design. You are as comfortable whipping up a quick prototype to share with Product and Design as you are refining and coming up with pixel-perfect web apps.

  • Most importantly, you possess a strong bias for action and a growth mindset. You are as comfortable zooming in to apply your expertise as you zoom out to see the big picture.

Nice-to-haves

  • Deep knowledge of Node.js and TypeScript

  • Experience with GraphQL

  • Experience with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools

  • Experience with containerization (Docker or similar)

  • Experience designing and setting up CI/CD pipelines

  • Experience with Design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Zeplin

  • Experience with ExpressJS

  • Experience with an ORM

  • Experience with Redis caching or similar distributed cache

  • Experience with NoSQL datastores such as DynamoDB or MongoDB.

  • You have implemented a serverless application/service

Helpful Information:

This resource will help explain Stride’s Compensation Philosophy and compensation practices, and will answer some common questions you might have.

Stride’s Compensation Philosophy utilizes a National Payscale, which is designed to fairly and equitably pay employees based on their performance and impact regardless of geographic location. For employees in the United States, our National Payscale leverages San Francisco Bay Area market data to determine our compensation bands for cash, commissions, or bonus (if applicable) and equity.

Unless otherwise noted, the cash compensation above is the total salary and does not include a bonus.  In addition to cash compensation, all full-time Striders will be given stock options to participate in Stride’s equity incentive program.  We want all Striders to be an owner of the company, value that ownership, and be able to participate in any future positive outcomes for the company.

Individual compensation packages are based on a few different factors unique to each candidate, including their skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons. Our compensation ranges are designed to be competitive, equitable, and growth-oriented.

We know that benefits are also an important piece of your total compensation package. To learn more about what’s included in total compensation, check out some of the benefits and perks Stride offers to all US-based employees.

At Stride, we believe in compensating Striders in ways that are true to their value in the marketplace, that inspire and motivate the team to execute our vision, that shape behavior toward productively building and sustaining Stride's culture, and that support the risks and rewards of a fast-growing technology company.

We know the confidence gap and imposter syndrome are a real thing. This can get in the way of meeting incredible candidates, so please don’t hesitate to apply — we’d love to hear from you!
