Role Overview:
As the Senior Director for the Core Platform Software Engineering group, you will be growing, leading, and managing the software engineering teams responsible for the core infrastructure services that are foundational to the Splunk Cloud Platform: job control and management on top of multiple Cloud Service Providers (Kubernetes), the internal service mesh between applications (Istio), traffic management both internally and between customer cloud and on-premise resources, customer placement and provisioning, resource efficiency, and more. Put simply, this group designs, builds, and runs all of the systems and services which underpin the Splunk Cloud Platform.

This is a software engineering role, where you will be expected to make critical buy vs. build decisions, and be able to reliably execute when we need to build something in-house. You will be expected to lead and evolve the organization and systems which enable Splunk’s Cloud Platform to scale through the next decade. In short, you will be a key enabler of the core business strategy for the company, and you will have a direct impact on the success of Splunk and our customers into the future.

You are someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and has a track record of technical expertise and management responsibility. This role involves collaborating closely with your peers across all engineering areas as well as product management, program management, and UX. Your teams will work across multiple engineering areas and are homed in many locations – the role requires flexibility and a willingness to learn.

We want you to enable every team member to do the best work of their lives, in a psychologically safe and supportive environment. This role requires a high level of emotional intelligence and empathy, while holding your teams accountable to achieve the goals of engineering excellence and improved customer experience, with high quality and velocity.

Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this role include:
  • You will map the business strategy onto your teams’ roadmaps, and ensure that the right priorities are funded and have credible plans for success (and then that we progress on executing them).
  • You will lead teams of software engineers to make the best choices between buying a solution and building one in-house
  • You will be accountable for initiatives that have significant business impact across a 6-18+ month time frame.
  • Encourage a data-driven culture to improve the performance, efficiency and scalability of services and systems to help scale the company.
  • You will diagnose and resolve systemic and organizational obstacles that prevent your team from delivering high-quality software.
  • You will champion an atmosphere of continuous improvement by serving as a coach, mentor, and technical advisor.
  • You will meet 1-1 with team members on a regular basis.
  • You will plan and support career development.
  • You will recruit and retain top talent, from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • You will cultivate and sponsor an environment that is psychologically safe, open to discussion and debate, and which values diversity of thought.
  • Provide technical leadership, career development, and mentoring to team members.

Requirements:

These requirements are flexible depending on the background of the person: no requirements list requires 100% be checked.

Our estimate is that the skills, competencies, and experiences below will require an individual with at least 15-20 years of experience building large software systems. That said, years of experience is but a proxy to knowledge, abilities, and experience.

  • Experience hiring and developing software engineers who recognize that production is a part of their job responsibility and who ensure delivery of quality services which reduce incidents impact and focus on the success of our customers.
  • Developing team identity, empowering direct reports and building career growth options for your team.
  • Experience working directly with customers and training software engineers how to work with customers.
  • Experience building cloud-native and/or on-premises infrastructure services.
  • Experience building and cultivating strong software engineering practices and processes
  • BS CS/EE or equivalent with 15+ years of industry experience, of which 5+ years is in Engineering Management.
  • Experience leading an organization and managing other managers at scale (e.g., an organization of 3+ software engineering teams)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We prioritize job seekers as our customers, unlike bigger job sites, by charging a small fee to provide them with curated access to the best companies and up-to-date jobs. This focus allows us to deliver a more personalized and effective job search experience.
  • Salaries for the engineering jobs on our site range from $100K-$200K. On average, senior engineer positions on our EchoJobs are about $160K.
  • The EchoJobs positions have been sourced and vetted from the top companies to work for in the US as a software engineer, including LinkedIn and other reputable job sites. We also have syndicated jobs from companies that have just raised funding, as well as those that have great unique products and culture. From all of these sources, our founder, Morgan, has also resourced the company's authenticity in terms of their website, public appearance, and more.
  • Yes, our users asked us for just this, so now our search filters allow you to search for your top jobs via location, as well as by onsite, remote, or both. Approximately 30% of our jobs are remote, so you’ve got the best options for you!
  • We have not yet implemented this option, but are considering doing so in the future. For the moment, you would need to cancel your subscription, and resubscribe when you wanted to come back.
  • We add new jobs to EchoJobs every day! We scan our sources for the newest jobs, verify them, and post them to EchoJobs within minutes. We add about 2,000-3,000 new jobs for you each day!
  • From starting your job search to getting hired, the entire job search process can take us software engineers anywhere between 3-6 months. However, at EchoJobs, we’re striving to shorten this duration by finding the best, newest jobs for you, so you can do less job searching, and more applying.
  • We’d recommend checking EchoJobs daily, as we add new jobs to the site each day. Additionally, if you got a chance to read our previous email on “what makes EchoJobs different from any other job search tools,” we also recommended that you set a job alert based on your job filters, so if you get emails on those new jobs, you could be checking more than once per day.
  • If you decide to continue with us after the 1-month trial, we definitely recommend this, as we all know it usually takes 3-6 months to find a quality job as a software engineer these days. So to best support you, we just adjusted our membership options at EchoJobs to monthly, 3 months, or 12 months (this option is more for passive job seekers looking a little bit for the future if they want to come back to work or make a job switch potentially. This lets you see what’s out there in case an even better fit job becomes available.)
  • EchoJobs is truly the only job site of its kind. We want to be THE spot for you to find the best job for you, and haven’t encountered any other company doing this. Other job sites are in niches besides software engineering or focus on a small portion of engineering jobs (like a specific coding language). In the words of Morgan, our founder, “I think what makes EchoJobs different is the amount of jobs, frequency that we add new jobs (we add 2,000-3,000 new jobs daily!), and the powerful search engines to find exactly the job you want more easily and efficiently. We can provide you with the most jobs that are vetted by us, we’ll continually find more new jobs for you, and we make it easier for you to apply and get hired.
