SR. DATA CENTER INFRSTRUCTURE ENGINEER

As a Senior Data Center Infrastructure Engineer within SpaceX’s IT Engineering team, you will collaborate with other internal teams and vendors to design, engineer and maintain enterprise data center facilities as well as IT hardware solutions for SpaceX's growing infrastructure demands. Your data center engineering responsibilities will include determining all aspects of data center requirements within dedicated data center locations as well as multi-purpose buildings. You will work closely with internal Facilities teams and IT stakeholders to standardize and maintain existing data center facilities as well as define the physical dimensions, layouts, utility power, UPS and HVAC specifications for new facilities. Regarding IT hardware engineering responsibilities, you will gather system performance requirements, design solution specifications, define standards, implement solutions and maintain/troubleshoot IT systems and infrastructure in an extremely fast paced and dynamic environment. You should have strong opinions about how to design, test, and qualify data centers facilities as well as hardware, systems, firmware, and server components. You should be familiar with industry standard hardware development processes and use best practices and keep in touch with internal and external business matters to enhance products and services for the organization. Most importantly, you should be prepared to build SpaceX’s next generation of data center facilities and server hardware solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serve as subject matter expert and team lead for data center facility and computer platform engineering, including the design, standardization and operation of data center facilities and the selection, optimization, standardization and validation of SpaceX’s server hardware products
• Design, implement and maintain monitoring of data center facility environmental, power usage, UPS runtime and other metrics necessary to ensure reliable operating environments for systems
• Develop automated reporting of system capacity and performance metrics to proactively identify systemic inefficiencies/bottlenecks, usage patterns, overall system health and growth forecasts
• Mentor and lead a team of systems engineers and administrators to help them design, configure and support data center facilities and purpose-built servers, with emphasis on performance-optimized and resilient designs
• Collaborate regularly with internal SpaceX teams to understand requirements, predict needs, cost-optimize solutions, and cultivate knowledge
• Drive the hardware lifecycle process from requirements gathering to architectural drafting, product provisioning, installing, configuring and performing ongoing maintenance
• Lead complex and cross-functional investigations to triage issues that may span networking, compute, software, firmware and power/cooling components
• Maintain technical documentation pertaining to data centers, system architectures, standards and best-practices
• Define and qualify second-source components and materials to ensure continuity in product line constraints with primary partners and suppliers

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science or another STEM discipline and 3+ years of engineering experience in an enterprise environment; or 7+ years of engineering experience in an enterprise environment in lieu of a degree
• 5+ years of professional experience designing data center facilities and enterprise class server infrastructure, specifically x86 servers (i.e. CPUs, PCIe, network, power, memory)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Experience with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) including tools to monitor, measure, manage, and/or control data center utilization
• Experience designing and maintaining enterprise-grade, scalable platforms in a data center environment
• Certifications related to IT infrastructure such as CompTIA ServerPlus, CompTIA Network, CCNP
• Experience working with multiple vendor hardware architectures
• Deployment and support of large-scale virtualization and containerization environments
• Linux and/or Windows OS system administration experience
• Knowledge of data center power design and HVAC best-practices
• Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills
• Willingness to respond to participate in on-call rotation

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range:         
Data Center Infrastructure Engineer/Senior: $125,000.00 - $175,000.00/per year                                            

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
