Senior Software Engineer, Developer Productivity

The Team

We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who can architect, implement, and scale our developer tools and frameworks that Upstart engineers use to build and maintain our services. This is a high-impact role that directly affects the productivity and quality of the entire engineering organization. Specifically, you’ll be joining our Product Quality team to work on tools and processes to accelerate engineering with a high quality bar as we scale.

The Quality team works on tools and processes to accelerate engineering with a high quality bar as we scale. We believe that Quality starts the moment engineers write code and are looking for people passionate about maintaining a high bar. Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus. 

Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.

Travel Requirements - We are digital first organization meaning you can work anywhere in the United States and that have quarterly on-site collaboration sessions. These meet-ups occur 3 days per Quarter at one of our offices (San Mateo, CA or Columbus, OH). Upstart will cover all travel related expenses need to travel to make these meetups!

How you’ll make an impact:

• Scope and lead technical projects with enormous impact for all Engineers within Upstart.
• Design, build, and maintain the core tools and processes used by all of Upstart’s engineering teams.
• Make critical decisions about the technology and architecture choices we make in building these products.
• Directly contribute to core design and write code.
• Help maintain a high caliber bar for the entire engineering organization by innovating and utilizing new technologies to improve quality.
• Drive ongoing efficiency and reliability improvements through design and automation.
• Help us build our engineering team and make Upstart a genuinely awesome place to work.

What we’re looking for: 

• Minimum requirements:
• 7+ years working with full stack web applications
• Strong Proficiency in at least one major full-stack framework (we use Ruby on Rails, but are open to all backgrounds).
• Intimate familiarity with multiple web and JavaScript/JS frameworks (we use React, but are open to all backgrounds).
• Solid understanding of SQL databases and domain modeling.
• Completely obsessed with high-quality; topics like TDD, Design Patterns, and Static Analysis excite and energize you.
• Preferred qualifications:
• Experience creating Test Frameworks and strong scripting/automation skills.
• Familiarity with Static Analysis tools/concept.
• A high-discipline development mindset.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within this range: $155,400-$215,000. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure.
