Senior Backend/Fullstack Software Engineer

As a Senior Backend/Fullstack Engineer at Upstart, you'll enjoy significant autonomy in architecting systems, writing algorithms, and crafting elegant user interfaces. You'll also get the chance to solve challenges with interesting engineering constraints, work in a distributed system, and work side by side with Data Scientists. You will be solving challenges with interesting engineering constraints and building complex features quickly to meet the growing demands of our unique role in the fintech ecosystem. We’re looking for curious and humble team members driven by a desire to move quickly and build robust systems that improve people’s lives. 

Position Location - Remote | United States

Time Zone Requirements - We have teams that operate across all time zones in the United States!

Remote / Work Requirements - We are digital first organization meaning you can work anywhere in the United States and that have quarterly on-site collaboration sessions. These meet-ups occur 3 days per Quarter at one of our offices (San Mateo, CA or Columbus, OH). Upstart will cover all travel related expenses need to travel to make these meetups!

How you'll make an impact:

• Work within all areas of the platform from our web interfaces and 3rd party API integrations to backend business logic
• Move quickly to drive both existing and greenfield projects forward, while always keeping our end users in mind
• Make architectural contributions and decisions to improve the reliability of our software and maintainability of our code base
• Help us build our engineering team and make Upstart a genuinely awesome place to work

What we're looking for:

• 7+ years working with full stack web applications'
• Strong Proficiency in at least one major full-stack framework (we use Ruby on Rails, but are agnostic))
• Intimate familiarity with multiple web and JavaScript/JS frameworks (React, but are open to all backgrounds)
• Solid understanding of SQL databases and domain modeling
• Jazzed when presented with a challenging problem to solve
• Desire to succeed as part of a team
• Happiest when you’re able to pivot between heads down solo work and collaborative sessions with your teammates

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within this range: $155,400-$215,000. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure.
