Staff Software Engineer

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Bill Pay Engineering team, you will work on an integrated payment processing service solution for Billing Aggregators that directly contributes to PayPal’s growth. You will play a key role on an engineering team that is directly responsible for solving complex engineering problems across multiple tech stacks and contributing to the development of products that span Braintree, Venmo, PayPal, and Hyperwallet.

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Bill Pay Engineering team, you will work on an integrated payment processing service solution for Billing Aggregators that directly contributes to PayPal’s growth. You will play a key role on an engineering team that is directly responsible for solving complex engineering problems across multiple tech stacks and contributing to the development of products that span Braintree, Venmo, PayPal, and Hyperwallet.

In your day-to-day role you will work closely with the Bill Pay Architect Lead, infrastructure teams, program and product management, and domain engineering teams to collaboratively remove barriers for successful execution of our company’s top priorities. You will gain exposure to cross functional technology and business domains such as transaction processing, settlement, pricing, and reporting. You will have the chance to work on various teams and technology stacks. Although most of our software is written in Ruby, we believe in using the best tool for the job.

Communication is key to our process, and we don't want to hinder it with walls. Many teams program in pairs, which means you always have another set of eyes to help you.

We practice test-driven development and believe that it helps us deliver simple solutions focused on real customer needs. Developers test, release and monitor their own code.

We keep the team in sync with daily stand-ups and have regular retrospectives to discuss things that are going well and opportunities for improvements.

What we look for in you:

• 6+ years of track record in designing and writing understandable, testable, and easy-to-maintain software. Doesn’t matter what language, just a focus on writing clean, well designed, and scalable code.

• Ability and desire to work in our collaborative environment: open team room, pair programming and fluid interactions with all products and operations teams.

• Interest in TDD and specific experiences using a test heavy approach to solve problems and create solutions.

• Focus on building solutions utilizing an agile approach: close relationships with Product Managers and Program Managers communicating and digesting real time feedback.

• Comfortable with context switching and managing across multiple priorities.

• Be a quick learner undaunted by complex systems. Ability to expand to new domains and be able to pick up and contribute quickly.

• Strong desire to learn, push the envelope and share knowledge with others.

• Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases

• Deep knowledge of industry design patterns and object-oriented programming

• Commitment to operational excellence through the development of automation, instrumentation of code, and monitoring solutions
