The Database Reliability Engineer Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Engineering, this role as a Staff Database Reliability Engineer, you will champion all things database at Okta.  Working closely with the product engineers, quality engineers, platform engineers and architecture teams, your primary focus will be on ensuring production databases remain operational at all times, while continually setting and achieving long-term performance, reliability and scalability goals in a platform with an exponential growth plan in the coming years

What you’ll be doing 

• Ensure effective performance and 24x7 availability of the production database systems 
• Participate in regular on-call rotations to ensure 24/7 coverage of all critical systems
• Lead efforts on performance tuning, scaling, and benchmarking the data services infrastructure
• Design, automate and document operational processes, tasks, and configuration management using Terraform and other internal tools
• Work directly with the Observability team to configure, apply and monitor SLIs and SLOs for all databases and database infrastructure
• Proactively detect pending issues and take preventive or corrective actions to avoid customer impact
• Manage and validate best practices are maintained for backups, disaster recovery, multi-region deployments and data integrity
• Ensure all compliance and data security processes are followed at all times

What you’ll bring to the role

• Exceptional communication skills, including technical writing in the English language
• Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with a strong sense of ownership and drive
• Understanding of the relationship between SLIs, SLOs, error budgets and SLAs and how they apply to database reliability
• Strong believer in automate everything and reducing toil for yourself and teammates
• Fast learner who is not afraid to tackle multiple challenges at once
• Familiar with SOC2, GDPR, HIPAA, FedRAMP and other compliance certifications as they pertain to data and data security
• Proficient in a Linux environment including Linux internals and tuning
• Proficiency in automating administrative tasks using Shell / Go

Experience in the  following 

• 3+ years of experience managing Postgres Aurora / MongoDB at scale
• 2+ years working on a Site Reliability Team or in a Cloud Operations/DevOps role; preferably as a first responder for the data tier on a high-traffic application
• 1+ years of experience with automating systems and infrastructure using Terraform
• 3+ years of experience using cloud infrastructure (AWS / Azure / GCP)
• Experience using Terraform to deploy AWS infrastructure (EC2 / EBS / S3 Snapshots / Aurora / RDS)
